60 fps capped game on G-Sync compatible monitor

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

60 fps capped game on G-Sync compatible monitor

Post by hitscan » 30 Nov 2019, 06:33

Hello everyone !

I just got an AOC 24G2U and i'm very happy with it, following the recommendations to cap the fps below the refresh rate and enable vsync.

But as you may know, this monitor a g-sync compatible range of 60-144hz and not the variable refresh rate range of AMD FreeSync (48-144). If i want to play the game capped at 60hz, like Outer Wilds, what is the recommended setting? The game feels a bit choppy with a bit of stutter/tearing. As the floor of operation is 60hz for the g-sync compatible mode, i don't know which setting to enable/disable: : should i disabled g-sync/v-sync or use a combination of the two?

Thank you!

Where did you see that g-sync compatible mode only does 60-144?

Oh i'm just talking about this specific monitor, as I read in the pcmonitors review, the range in g-sync compatible mode is 60-144 : https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-24g2u-24g2/

The review says:

"However; an LFC-like technology was supported, with the monitor keeping at a multiple of the frame rate with its refresh rate."

So it doesn't really matter. 50FPS will be shown at 100Hz, for example.

Ok, so no specific setting for these 60fps capped games? It doesn't matter if G-sync / v-sync is on or off?

For 60fps pre-capped games, smoothest motion experience:

Refresh Rate = Maximum
Keep at 144 Hz for 144 Hz GSYNC. 60fps@144Hz GSYNC is lower lag than 60fps@60Hz.

GSYNC = ON

VSYNC = doesn't matter in this case
It's only for max-Hz handling (since a well framepaced 60fps game will never/rately trigger the fallback VSYNC handling, which occurs when frametimes are shorter than fastest refresh cycle times, i.e. >144fps).

RTSS or other frame rate capping utility = unnecessary
If the game is already self-capping at 60fps

Sometimes though the internal FPS limiter of 60FPS games can be jittery (it's not common, but it can happen.) If you observe small stutters all the time, try using RTSS and cap to 60 or 59.9 with it, to see if that removes the small stutters.

Good point -- yes. An external frame rate cap utility can smooth the frame-pacing of a jittery in-game frame rate cap.
