What 240hz TN Monitor to get?

Post by kien76 » 10 Jun 2020, 17:31

So i had the Acer XF252Q, it was an amazing monitor but the response time/motion clarity wasnt what i expected, it was too blurry and only playable on max overdrive. I'm currently looking at the hp omen 25f and xl2546s. Are there any other montitors i should looknout for? prefferable with 2nd gen tn panel, maybe even a 144hz one

What confuses me is that I saw folks on this forum saying to others to get the monitor you're trying to run away from. I am getting more and more confused the more I learn.

BenQ Zowie XL2546S is probably the best choice you can make, especially for competitive play. If you're looking for the best performance, I'd surely go for XL2546S.

I have the Acer Predator XN253QX and I love it.

I've come from using IPS and I'm pretty anal about image quality, but for a TN this is extremely good.

Also, G-Sync module is very good, or I can run ULMB @ 144Hz. I tend to stick with G-Sync though just because it's smoother and less hassle.

The new BenQ is good but you have to expect to hit 240fps, if you don't you will see stuttering, then you have to start capping framerates etc.

Other 240hz TNs aren't better. IPS are worse.

That's not true at all. BenQ Zowie XL2546S has Adaptive-Sync support for both AMD Free-Sync and NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible. If you don't hit 240 fps, Free-Sync/G-SYNC mode will take care of tearing and stuttering you might experience below 240 fps.

It also highly depends on what games you play. Not all games have issues with displaying fluent image if you're not reaching 240 fps to cover 240 Hz refresh rate. CS:GO, for example, remains completely fluent and tearless, even when you drop below 240 fps. Also, tearing is MUCH less visible with such fast refresh rate. If you play competitively, you choose performance over visuals anyway. You rather want to turn all settings to low to squeeze as much fps as possible for the lowest possible processing lag.

G-Sync module vs G-Sync Compatible, it keeps everything smooth regardless of spiking framerate.

The BenQ XL2546S has G/Freesync Compatibility but not while DyAc+ is enabled. You are literally paying for DyAc+ on the BenQ.

Yes, they are G-Sync/Freesync Compatible right? But not when you have DyAc+ enabled.

So then you either choose, DyAc+ or G-Sync/Freesync compatible. If you don't get on with DyAc+ (which some people don't) you then have G-Sync/Freesync compatible monitor, albeit a very expensive one.

You can buy G/Freesync compatible monitors way cheaper than the XL2546S, so if you aren't going to take advantage of DyAc+ then I would suggest you go for something else.

okay so weve come to the conclusion that at top tier gaming the XL2546S is the best. Ive been looking into IPS monitors and i know that top tn panels still have the edge. The Benq is out of my range as im looking for something within 300-400$ range. Aiming for response time/motion clarity. Im very very very close to shooting the gun on the VG 259 and the MSI 251rx but i keep seeing that their not at the best TN panels yet and the only dominant one ive found is the BenQ. What do you guys think?
