GPU vs Display scaling on a new GPU

Post by MasterDisaster » 27 Jun 2021, 05:09

Hi,

So I play CSGO at a stretched resolution. Not because of performance gains, but because I'm used to it and I like it way better than playing in 1080p.
I always used display scaling on both of my displays (main: ROG Strix XG258Q and secondary AOC G2460V) but I wonder if GPU scaling wouldn't be the way to go. I have an RTX3070 on an X570 MB with a Ryzen 7 3700X CPU.

I can test this and "feel" if it's any different, but I'm wondering if it would add any input lag. This is pretty hard to test without a specialist setup, but a few ms can make the difference. I wonder if someone here can give me an insight?
Also, if the answer is "no", should I run only the main display on GPU scaling or both?

Another small question to end my rant... My main display is set to run at 240Hz and my secondary at 75Hz. Is this OK, or should I consider going to 60Hz for the second? Some people claim it gives a benefit, but I have no clue to why this would be the case.

If anyone could give me some information regarding this, I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you very much!

So check it out and feel it. : D I have a 1660 super and 144Hz monitor and I can feel that display scaling is always better than GPU, input lag is less.
I use the display scaling with "no scaling", I play on FHD
"full-screen" is just as good. "Aspect ratio" - immediately adds input lag, you can feel it.
GPU scaling is always worse, whichever value I choose.

Some people say that scaling on rtx 2 and 3 series on GPU is just as good as on display.
So you have to check it yourself.

What GPU are you use? i have 1080ti and it's hard to say which is better, but i think gpu is for my a little bit better.

I can't feel any difference between them whatsoever. That's on a GTX 980 Ti. Turing GPUs (GTX 16xx and RTX 2xxx) have a different GPU upscaler (higher quality). I don't know if that scaler increases latency or not.

I also can't feel any latency difference between native res and GPU or display upscaled lower res. So at least for me, it appears scaling does not increase latency.
