Inversion artifacts and...burn in?

Post by 16kRetinalImplants » 14 Dec 2023, 19:14

I have two HP Omen 27k monitors, with two different panels:
BOE: https://www.panelook.com/ME270QUM-NF2_B ... 59136.html
AUO: https://www.panelook.com/M270QAN07.0_AU ... 57185.html
(mind the dot in url's, same with youtube links below; what's up with external links here?)

The AUO seems to have inversion artifacts (from my understanding of this excellent comment: viewtopic.php?t=3629#p28881).

There are horizontal checkerboard-like patterns that appear around small moving objects, I've been using the UFO test for consistency.
However, these artifacts seem to have some persistence, like temporary burn-in.
If I run the UFO ghosting test for a few minutes, there will be UFO streaks left on the monitor for a few minutes afterwards. The streaking is only where the UFO's were moving, and if I zoom in to enlarge them during the "burn-in" phase, the "burned-in" streaks are also bigger.

I recorded videos:
Showing the inversion artifacts: https://youtube.com/watch?v=bw3rx_C2itc
And the subsequent "burn-in" (skip to 1:05 for best view): https://youtu.be/NOuBINa4cCA

I have another AUO-panel monitor (but 1440p instead of 4k) that also has the same issue (so my first experience with AUO is leaving a bad taste for sure).

Are these in fact inversion artifacts? And am I being picky for wanting to return these AUO-panel monitors for this?

Yes -- those are inversion artifacts.

The image retention (caused by inversion algorithm not working as well as it should be) will fade away after a while.

Inversion artifacts does appear to be abnormally strong on this specific panel if there's some sustained inverison-artfact ghosts behind the UFO. The average LCD will typically have faint inversion artifacts but it is particularly strong on this particular panel, and possibly to a level of intensity that warrants an RMA.

Thanks so much for the reply! (And great website, I've learned so much here.)

I'm not sure if a future firmware update might help with the inversion voltages but I'm not counting on it. Since there is an alternative panel from BOE available for the 27k I will shoot for that instead. Too bad, the default colors on the BOE panel are significantly duller, hopefully a calibration will solve that.
