Is 240hz really a sharpness compromise?

Post by oneleg » 20 Aug 2021, 02:34

Hello , nice to meet you all monitor lovers. this is pretty much my first post here :)
Anyway , so up till now ive been playing with this XL2430 by BenQ . bought it when 144hz for me was revolutionary and had a blast with this monitor for the last like 5 years.
but its time to move on , especially when I can really afford something new and the two monitors that really catched my eye are
alienware AW2721D and asus ROG Swift PG279QM , I would have gotten the ROG one if it was in stock to be honest - for now it is not , and when I started to talk about the AW2721D with friends they told me that it is pretty much a compromise in terms of sharpness because it is more blurry than the S2721DGF yet of course with higher Hz. I am playing alot of competitive stuff so I want a monitor with 240hz,2k.
Anyway , my point is pretty much asking if you guys have any more suggestions for me ? or is the AW2721D absolutely amazing and the bluriness talk is rubbish?
Thank you!

Hey man, welcome.

Do you mean motion sharpness? If yes It can only be sharper because higher the refresh rate, sharper the motion plus its smoother.

There are bunch more 1440p 240+Hz monitors out there but here are some:
Asus XG27AQM IPS 270Hz
Acer XB273U GXbmiipruzx IPS 270Hz
Acer XV272UX bmiipruzx IPS 270Hz
Gigabyte FI27Q-X IPS 240Hz
Omen X 27 TN 240Hz

Overall PG279QM should be a good one. XG279QM is the same monitor with 30Hz more.

Tbh, going from 144 to 240Hz is not a massive difference. It would make more sense to upgrade to something like 360 or 480Hz but thats for another topic.

Expect new 1440p 360Hz and 1080p 480Hz monitors in 2023.

Hi ! first of all thank you for the response and the suggestions,
second , the PG279QM is something I really cannot find in stock right now. I will check the Asus XG27AQM so thanks for that.
also , what are your thoughts on the Alienware AW2721D?
about the 360-480hz upgrade , i do realize that 240hz is only quite a small upgrade yet I really really want to upgrade a monitor together with my pc hardware , im at a point where im kinda tired of waiting for the next big thing if you know what i mean xP .
the 1440p is an upgrade in itself for me and i want to get my setup ready to enjoy bf2042 as much as i can + some competitive games that can actually run on 240hz

All the IPS listed here basically perform the same. AW would be worth only if its the cheapest from the bunch because it doesn't have mbr (backlight strobing). I see XG and AW are both priced at $700 on Newegg which would mean AW is currently overpriced. But prices in your country may be different.

AFAIK most of the 360Hz monitors are above $500. The 390Hz monitor by Acer is currently on sale at a brick and mortar store for $399 and many are saying it's the new Esports kind (monitor) Just some food for thought.

I'm in the same boat as you. I would like to replace my Acer XB240H.

There is a really good review for the Acer XB273U GX by Bijan Jamshidi. The only downside is the fixed overdrive mode if you activate gsync. So if you have higher hardware requirements for games in the future, you ll have problems playing on <80 fps.

The PG279QM fixes this problem, it seems. I'm not sure if I should wait for other monitors or get this one...

Thank you all for the comments, I have chosen the alienware AW2721D because i just cannot find the PG279QM anywhere.. and the XG27AQM is something I cannot find in my country so it feels like the AW2721D would be the best fit for now as I am not interested in waiting anymore. seems like a good option though rather than a full on compromise.
