1000fps cameras in smartphones! Good for display analysis.
New smartphones are coming that can shoot at 1000fps!
Sony 1000fps Smartphone Camera Sensor
This brings a new dimension to citizen display testing -- users & bloggers able to do high speed videos for things like input lag testing (like GSYNC Preview #2) to analyzing display response behaviour (like High Speed Video of LightBoost).
Even display manufacturers can benefit from using simple high speed video in analyzing their display response behaviours, too.
High-speed videos are also very useful for rudimentary LCD GtG analysis (at the coarse millisecond granularity) on a full-screen basis -- as found in Electronics Hacking: Creating a Strobe Backlight which some of our users (and even a few display manufacturers) followed to experiment with LCD blur reduction modes. Full-screen analysis of LCD GtG behaviours is extremely useful for several use cases including scanout analysis and overlapping-refresh-effect analysis (in addition to point testing, via the usual photodiode oscilloscope method -- for accurate GtG response graphs).

This is insane. My casio exlim zr700 can do 1000 fps, but only at a resolution of 224x64 .
1000 fps in full HD is getting into phantom camera territory.

Also, this is the image quality of the 1080p at 960fps in this new smartphone sensor:

I'm actually pretty impressed, this used to be the territory of Phantom cameras costing $10K+ ....
Even if I can only record a 5 second clip, this will be excellent for display-analysis and millisecond-accurate lag-testing applications (GSYNC / FreeSync lag testing, using the modified mouse technique). It's going to be great for display analysis too, including the high speed video of lightboost.
I think that before 2020, and even maybe by end of this year, iPhones and GoPros will do 1080p+ at 1000fps. Tiny smartphone lens won't be able to capture as much light as a large-lens Phantom, but for outdoor daylight use, it should be acceptably sufficient given modern backside-illuminated sensors at 1/1000sec exposure per frame.

That video is a bit concerning, the slow motion portions of the video were at most a few seconds of playback at 15fps. Testing latency with one of these is going to be mighty tedious if you only have a ~50ms window in which to capture your event.

This is indeed a consideration, however:
You can get a longer time window if you use a lower resolution. That's more than sufficient for testing with a mouse -- you don't need full 1080p resolution for that. But yes, if you were limited to 50ms, that would make lag testing an issue unless I used some kind of a lag-less electronic trigger (mouse button press initiated the high speed video instantly.
For high-resolution GtG analysis of a display via high speed video -- 50ms is quite plenty of time for the High Speed Flicker test -- http://www.testufo.com/flicker -- since refresh cycles are ~4.1ms at 240Hz. (~8.3ms for 120Hz, ~16.7ms for 60Hz). A great GtG analysis of a LCD display is the High Speed Video Of LightBoost.
