Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum but something has been bugging me for a while now. A couple of years ago my Panasonic plasma burned out on me. I owned it for 12 years, and for the first 11 years there was no burn in. Then, a year later, it did eventually have permanent burn in and I decided to replace it. I got a LED from Panasonic and I couldn't believe how bad the motion handling was. By no means was it a cheap model, but I realized that it was an inherent flaw of LED TVs. So, I returned it and bought an OLED instead. It's a C2 from LG. It's a great TV but playing 30 FPS games -- I'm a console gamer -- makes it stutter beyond belief. It doesn't smear like the LED did, but the motion surely isn't smooth to say the least. After lots of research online I found this website and it seems like there's no real solution for this problem as of yet. BFI on my C2 makes the image too dark and the flickering is too obvious. Motion interpolation on the other hand has too much artifacts. So, it looks like I'm stuck with stutter. I have a few questions though. First, I don't remember the problem of "doubling the image" when playing 30 FPS games on my 600Hz plasma. Why is that? Is it because it was only a 42'' TV -- I have a 55'' TV now -- and thus less noticeable? Or am I falsely remembering the motion clarity of the plasma at 30 FPS? Is it bias? Second, is there any OLED TV out there that has great motion interpolation without creating tons of artifacts? I've heard good things about Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung in this regard. Any truth to these stories?
Thank you,
Illya
Plasma vs. OLED question
Re: Plasma vs. OLED question
Hello and welcome to the forum. OLED is not good at lower frame rates due to the way that it handles sample and hold. From my understanding plasma was the second closest thing to CRT level motion clarity. It isn't bias, and you're not falsely remembering the motion clarity either. Plasma was well revered for being able to handle old-school gaming much better than LED and OLED.
Fortunately, there is a solution for getting better OLED clarity which you can check out here: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12342 (though this is more for retro consoles and not Xbox/PS3 etc.)
This post will also go into detail about why OLED looks worse for lower frame rates: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=10594

What about the duplicate image? I never noticed it on my plasma with 30 FPS games. Why is that?Dalek wrote: ↑06 Feb 2024, 01:07Hello and welcome to the forum.
