Steam OS for PC

Everything about latency. This section is mainly user/consumer discussion. (Peer-reviewed scientific discussion should go in Laboratory section). Tips, mouse lag, display lag, game engine lag, network lag, whole input lag chain, VSYNC OFF vs VSYNC ON, and more! Input Lag Articles on Blur Busters.

Steam OS for PC

Post by F1zus » 15 Sep 2024, 02:35

Many people have mouse problems and inconsistent input due to unstable operation of the Windows operating system. As you know, any action in Windows (for example, disabling devices in the task manager, changing the power plan) makes the mouse feel different.
Windows has many problems.
But have any of you tried to install Valve's system, Steam OS, on your PC?
For example, it is used on Steam Deck.
SteamOS is an operating system based on Linux. It is based on Debian 8.
As far as I know, it is available for installation on any PC and supports all games from Valve, CS2, Dota 2 and others.
My goal is to install this operating system and compare it with Windows in terms of mouse responsiveness, input lag and other things.
Unfortunately, I am not at home now and do not have access to my PC.
If someone finds this interesting, they could install Steam OS themselves and share their results.

A few years ago I tried Nobara and while it was more consistent, I could never get its latency to be as low as Windows. Tried Bazzite last year which is almost like SteamOS and while it had even better compability than Nobara and probably the best performance I ever experienced it was the same experience in terms of mouse feel. Tried CachyOS as well with all the known latency optimizations and despite someome claiming to have tested it to be lower latency than Windows by about 0.5 ms it still wasn't on par with my custom image.
