looking for 1440p monitor with good 120hz+ strobing !

Post by alexander1986 » 19 Sep 2024, 00:00

hello, currently using an ancient Asus VG248QE with lightboost at 120hz+120 fps gaming and it has served me very well, but now am interested in 1440p and a bit lower input lag+response times if possible,

for me most important is GOOD strobing quality at 120hz and decent to good strobing or better at 240hz+, if possible, TN or IPS since OLED is probably a bit too expensive at the moment(?)

I tried to look around even testufo database that someone linked on this forum:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/ ... c/htmlview

but it seems I could not find any good examples of 1440p strobing @ 120 hz there, would appreciate any tips or info about good 1440p strobing TN/IPS monitors ! thanks.

I should warn that most 2021+ 1440p lcds use ksf backlight which causes red ghosting for strobe modes. And red ghosting is more apparent at lower refresh rates, so 120 Hz won't look ideal. If u can handle this, there are few options. I personally don't like ksf strobing at low Hz.

There are few monitors from ~2020 that don't use ksf but they most likely won't have a good 120Hz strobing due to bad overdrive and missing strobe phase settings for QFT modes. Also their GtG is a bit slower.

1080p market is better in this regard. There are few ksf-free panels out there. If 120Hz strobing is important I'd be sticking to 1080p. For lower Hz XG2431 is good but has QC issues, and XL2566K is good. Not sure how those new DyAc 2 models perform at 120Hz.

Some of the new OLEDs are cool too. You can do clean crosstalk-less 120Hz bfi, but at a higher MPRT, so motion clarity is not as clear/sharp as on lcds.

I see I see, thanks for the solid info, was looking at this one https://www.asus.com/displays-desktops/ ... vg27aqm1a/ but there is no reviews or detailed tests anywhere that I can find so far, was thinking with 270 hz max possibly the 120/144hz strobed can be decent on that one, would like to see some UFO tests on that one!

and yes that slow red phosphor decay does look kind of distracting on some newer monitors, so I would like to avoid a monitor with that,

for 1080p monitors, so far looking at XG2431 and asus VG249QM1A which use the same panel I think, seems easier and cheaper to get in europe at last than the XG2431! anyway thanks again got some deciding to do !

In terms of 1440p strobed displays, your only options are either standard WLED backlight or a QD backlight, meaning the options are very slim.

There have been praises of the MAG274QRF-QD for it's strobing mode, but I haven't been able to find a valuable, in-depth review about it's strobing capabilities. In particular - no MPRT or crosstalk tests at >1440pps

NOTE: None (both WLED & QD) of these monitors can be compared head-to-head, as the testing methodology varies between reviewers.

In terms of WLED backlight 1440p ≥120hz displays, options are even slimmer. Here's a few I've been able to find from my research. Reviews will be in brackets.

- AOC Q24G2A (24" 165hz IPS) [1, 2]
- HP X27q (27" 165hz IPS) [1, 2]
- HP Omen 27q (27" 165hz IPS, there's 2 panels being used under the same model name - LG & BOE so it's panel lottery) [1, 2]
- Viewsonic OMNI VX2728J-2K (27" 180hz IPS) [1]
- LG 27GS75Q (maybe "ksf-enhanced", but milder than most I've found, 200hz IPS, i'd argue it's not ksf but YMMV.) [1]
- Omen X 27 (only 240hz 1440p LCD panel that's WLED backlight, TN) [1]
- Gigabyte GS27Q (1440p 180hz LCD, WLED backlight, IPS) [1]

There are a few older 144-180hz IPS and TN panels in this category as well, but they're not for sale anymore.

In terms of QD backlight 1440p ≥120hz displays, your options are:
(gonna quote a comment on blurbuster blog post)

As I know, these models will use AUO panel with QD backlight.

Acer XB273K, XV273K, XV272U X, XB273U GX, XB323U GP/GX, X27, X32
Asus XG27UQ, PG329Q, PA27UCX, PA32UCX, PG27UQ, PG32UQX
MSI PS321QR, MAG274QRF-QD

I guess XG279Q, XB273U GS/NV should be QD too, some user checked by camera it didn’t got the red remain problem, so I just need a spectrum picture to do the confirm.
This is sadly as much info as I've been able to find in regards to this topic, hope it helps.

Here's a shot by techless of the Q24G2A @ 165hz strobing (MBR 11) 1440pps (~140nits supposedly)
Image

He has not specified whether higher MBR levels offer lower MPRT than above shot and how the luminance level changes.

You can also test KSF ghosting at the new Color Ghosting test at TestUFO 2.0 at https://beta.testufo.com/color-ghosting

For good strobing quality you'll want to look for monitors that can do good QFT. Otherwise strobing quality is going to be pretty average on lcds. That means u need:
  • fast native GtG
  • highest refresh rate possible
  • refresh rate headroom
  • custom QFT resolutions
  • many levels of overdrive
  • many levels of pulse phase
  • many levels of pulse width
  • ksf-free backlight
There are very few monitors that offer this and they are all 1080p at the moment (not including the EVE/Dough models). That would be any monitor that supports Blur Busters Strobe Utility (e.g. XG2431, XL2566K... although I think older Zowie monitors don't have many levels of overdrive). And ofcourse you'll want your monitor to operate within the desired brightness and refresh rate range. And good VRR + strobing implementation would make things even better. Pulsar is supposedly good but backlights they're using are ksf.

I've come across reviews (thanks to a acquaintance) which showcase the capability of the Q24G2A strobing and MAG274QRF-QD E2 strobing respectively
(highest setting & crosstalk shots at different refresh rates)

https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-q24 ... onsiveness

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kZnaRwYsfM - MSI (Cons: locked brightness control, ~260nits)

Hope this helps
