New router = better

Everything about latency. This section is mainly user/consumer discussion. (Peer-reviewed scientific discussion should go in Laboratory section). Tips, mouse lag, display lag, game engine lag, network lag, whole input lag chain, VSYNC OFF vs VSYNC ON, and more! Input Lag Articles on Blur Busters.

New router = better

Post by hazilla » 07 Oct 2024, 13:23

Thought I'd make a quick post. I've been playing CS for a long time, always noticed something felt a bit off, it felt like the shooting mechanics were weird, like player positions weren't accurate, felt like I was dying just after I had strafed out of their fire, shots weren't registering right. I tried tweaking everything under the sun, in-game settings, bios, windows tweaks etc, nothing worked.

I've always just had the default router from the ISP, and thought I’d buy a new one for whatever reason and it came yesterday, bought a Firewalla Gold Plus. It's expensive but I have noticed an improvement right away. My ping dropped a little bit, and the gameplay feels way smoother. Positioning and hit reg definitely feels more accurate. I'm on 1gbit fibre, Zen UK.

I tried the blufferbloat test before and I got C, now it's A just FYI

What a coincidence, I also changed mine yesterday... but I didn't want to comment on it until at least 2 weeks had passed... for me it was also a positive improvement

How come you guys never tried connecting cat cable directly to pc avoiding router.

But you still need modem between to get the sync and connection ...that how it works in germany for most and you can't just connect your PC directly to the wall "TAE dose" (dont know how it call in english) or cable multimedia box and then to PC without nothing between like a modem...as example. don't know how it works in your country...

I tried pure modem only here already and connected direct to pc per lan...and zero help difference...

And even for Fiber same but some buildings don't need a modem if it is FTTB...
A separate modem is necessary if you use FTTH (Fiber to the Home) as your fiber optic connection technology and your router does not already have an integrated modem. If your building is connected to our fiber optic network via FTTB (Fiber to the Building), you do not need an additional modem

but i never had fiber myself and so i don't rly know how exactly this tech works...but what i read that FTTB dont need a modem but still a router needed...all very weird for me. So it must be possible to connect your PC directly to the wall and even without router if having such tech ?

our fritzboxes cost like 150 euros and o2 router lte same price and more...i cant imagine that routers or modems are my problem here cause in early days i played on 1und1 home router (which today cost like only 40 euros) and i feel very fine until the day the shit happen for me here and start somewhere around 2017...since that i changed providers with routers from them and tried everything and even buy 3rd party routers and modems even too...cause i had that idea too one day that maybe something wrong with the ISP routers which they sended me and even tried 3party LTE router...

sadly nothing of this helped me rly and i still have no idea what is going on and only had again those random 2 matches which just feel fine and like fixed and i was happy for some moment...but just after the horror shit started again and everything same like before bad and only worse each next match...its a circle of satans hell where things repeat over and over with each next fix you try and you still don't understand after how the fk this possible and what is going on...that my real issue here and how i would describe it if someone asked me.

but im lucky for you guys that it helped you some and you feel stable...where are you from ZINZIRIO ?

For example, routers and phones have operating systems inside(Iphone BSD , Android Linux). If you're looking for something very stable with good performance, I can only recommend Cisco. They have a unique operating system that no other router has (AS well FPGA chips created by Cisco, which is critical). Most other routers run on Linux, which is not the best choice. New Cisco routers are, of course, very expensive, but you can easily find cheaper options on eBay.

ye, that is good idea.
+ if use optical converter, you can prevent rfi from cord.

Optical cables don’t change anything in terms of latency. Every PC in my house is connected with 10 Gbps optical cables, and there’s no difference—nothing better or worse in latency. Don’t waste your money.
Just taking a photo as proof.

is the cisco nexus switch grounded? I see a lot of people here advice shielded ftps without mentioning that they should be grounded
