UFO Test: Aliasing Visibility

Post by cursed-gamer » 11 Nov 2024, 18:30

Why do I have jagged edges only on the left on the line in every possible monitor Hz and on the right they look smoothened although AA is off?

On my iphone it looks fine: https://streamable.com/xtivyr

On my monitor more less like this, but it's just an OBS clip: https://streamable.com/jyqeng In live view the line is more jagged on the left than on the right, actually it's like the line is split 50/50 AA Off / AA On. Additionally right side is more "stuttery".

It happens on every LCD monitor I had in my entire life with one exception. When I bought my first ever brand new gaming PC around 2016, the line was jagged in full lenght but after weeks not anymore. Really weird.

Thanks for the report.

The AA may vary from platform to platform because of the HTML5 API behavior and some bugs in the earlier version of aliasing-visibility that has been fixed (hopefully) in TestUFO 2.0 .... Even browser upgrades changed the AA behavior due to changes in how lines were drawn by web browsers.

May you try the TestUFO 2.0 version? Try https://beta.testufo.com/aliasing-visibility

Ok so I tried 2.0 version and it's the same. I tried to capture it and I hope you can see exactly what I mean:

Left side: https://streamable.com/4d61t8
Right side: https://streamable.com/kk0962

As you can see on the right, jaggies are "chaotic" and stuttery while on the left are consistent.

There is no difference between Firefox and Chrome. On my phone still looks like it should.

Here you have results with vertical orientation of my monitor:

My GPU is RTX3070 but it was present on RTX2060 too. Considering that this happened on computers with different parts and monitors, I rule out a hardware problem.

I see what you mean!
1. Please make sure AA is the same setting on both devices
2. Make sure the arcminutes of resolution is the same (e.g. 30-degree FOV for 1920 pixel width).
3. Many phones are retina resolution which often obscures this;

I see the same chaoticness on the phone -- just you need to set the scientific variables as modern smartphones usually are higher resolution than many desktop monitors, lower resolution amplifies the chaoticness of the right end. Otherwise the phone looks better.

Once the playing field is levelled -- this behavior is normal for a simple line drawing algorithm -- this is because of math rounding errors on where the jaggies starts/end, as the rendering starts from the left tip to the right tip. Some modifications may be made to improve the line drawing algorithm but the point is focussed on being able to no longer seeing jaggies (e.g. large viewing distances).

This test was made when people originally said you could not tell apart 1080p versus 4K from 10 foot away from a 40-48" TV, years ago, and this test was a way to amplify the visibility of pixels in such a situation, so that was the original purpose of the test.
