New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
So we've had solid OLED monitors so far on the market, but sadly quite lacking in features especially with their top price attacked. Monitors that are 4K 240Hz dual-mode 1080p@480Hz that don't use full DP 2.1 80Gbps and rely on DSC that can cause issues and really no reason to use it as new connector is available for a while. Next lack of BFI is kinda absurd still to not see on any monitor, I don't count that half Hz use that's useless and not a proper implementation. Add BFI-VRR to that, something we've seen already strobe LCD with VRR but still no on OLED somehow, tech that is faster and has no cross-talk issues and it's way better tech to use it on.
So I was looking forward to this CES to see what new may show, though it's over now and it seems nothing new somehow for this type of display, it was mostly QD-OLED monitors, those still don't offer dual-mode and questionable coating on them. The lack of WOLED dual-mode models was odd to see. Currently I don't see anything like it on horizon so I'm kinda torn as I want to get a new monitor, now I also don't want to wait very long so may buy something, but still a bit annoying with lack of some features and no news for updated models.
In short, I want to move to higher PPI but also have as best motion clarity as I do play competitive fps games. The dual-mode ones are a great option as they're also matte which I prefer. Basically all-in-one monitor for me. Current dual-mode Asus one is €1800 for me. That's quite an insane price (tax sucks where I am) for a monitor that doesn't offer yes, basic features I'd say.
I'd just like to see a matte 4K 240Hz OLED, 1080p 480Hz dual-mode, DP2.1 80Gbps, max Hz BFI (BFI-VRR as extra). Nothing so far like that from what I've seen everywhere lately, I wonder about some roadmap I mean this must come out eventually. Though when as nothing was shown on CES so who knows when then. Maybe they'll do 1000Hz in 1080p for new panel, can bandwidth wise and OLED easily.
Thoughts? As it seems nothing like this will even come out in a year+ even!

Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
If the new 240hz 4K QD-OLED monitor had a matte coating, I'd probably buy it.
It used to be a case of choosing either good motion clarity or good colours. Now we have both. OLED isn't 'perfect' by any means, but it's definitely making huge jumps in improvement year after year now.
I would ask yourself the question of what do you spend most of your time on? On your desktop or gaming? Personally I am looking forward to 600hz OLED monitors since 600hz should work better with various frame rate, e.g. 24, 30, 60 for video playback.
It's very rare and difficult to get something that ticks all the boxes, so either wait for the 'perfect' monitor which will probably be years from now (or maybe it will never be developed). Or buy something that's good enough in the meantime.

Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
For sure, kinda depends it could be half-half use desktop and gaming, though when play fps I really want best I can get basically. As far as desktop or say HDR use OLED wise, most content is not or all games don't support it so yeah kinda less of a use vs good motion clarity.Dalek wrote: ↑14 Jan 2025, 06:14If the new 240hz 4K QD-OLED monitor had a matte coating, I'd probably buy it.

Right, any 120 multiplier will cover 24,30 content so 480Hz is still that which is nice.
True, hard to have all boxes ticked, but I'm still surprised the lack of new dual-mode OLED monitors as of now, as well as lack of true BFI on monitors that some TVs even offered for years. But yes it's true that you can not know when X will come out so buy something now.
I will wait a bit more, maybe by Computex to see what new may be announced, current ones will either yet to come, or may fall in price.
Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
Maybe for people like us, we start considering a dedicated gaming monitor.
I busted out my old FW900
CRT recently and sat it next to my G9 off the side lol
Been just scooting my keyboard over when it’s time to game.
Sure made my 27”
1440 (5120x1440 at times) seem like 8k as a side note.

The only rumored DP2.1 dual mode WOLED was the ViewSonic XG323-4K-OLED-2Doobeedoo wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 17:10In short, I want to move to higher PPI but also have as best motion clarity as I do play competitive fps games. Viewsonic's roadmap doesn't seem to have a release date for this model.
I guess there's a possibility that manifacturers just skipped CES for these panels.
My guess is that some manifacturer will make one later this year, just to clear up stock of WOLED panels.

Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
I have two questions related to dual-mode displays in general.
1. Does it to cost significantly more for the display manufacturer to allow for native 480Hz instead of 480Hz at only 1/4 res? Do we see it because the lack of faster ports (even HDMI 2.1 is not being used on all monitors yet) or it's a matter of costs and can it drop down within next few years? If the cost is driven by some low volume chips, it may drop once more monitors/TVs start to use them. Just like the first chips for HDMI 2.0, 2.1 and DP 1.4 and 2.0 in the past. I've seen news about only one company making the required chips for HDMI 2.1 functionality in the TV, and that more were planned (at the time) to follow in following years. Or maybe it generates more heat and therefore requires more complicated cooling?
Since I know absolutely nothing about display internals, firmware, display "drivers" etc. I cannot try to predict how fast/slow the adoption of these displays can go in nearterm future.
2. Can't they make something with 1:1 scaling? If the display can display 240Hz at 4K, why only 1080p, and not 1920x2160 with 1:1 pixel match? (actually 1:2

Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
Did you know that dual modes are blurry? Turns out it's not properly integerly scaled. As far as I'm aware this is the case with all WOLED dual modes. I haven't seen tests on LCDs, but I assume they are affected too. It lands exactly between a standard blurry bicubic and ideal integer. So please go complain so LG can fix as soon as possible and not transfer the flaw to next gen panels. These monitors aint cheap so I'd postpone the purchase if I was looking forward to this feature specifically.

Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
Yeah I know about that monitor, it seems Asia only I'm in Europe so no sign of it. I'm sure it would also cost a lot as Asus model. But definitely weird this CES they didn't show more of these monitors though. Currently I see LG model on good sale which is quite decent.kyube wrote: ↑28 Jan 2025, 14:31The only rumored DP2.1 dual mode WOLED was the ViewSonic XG323-4K-OLED-2Doobeedoo wrote: ↑13 Jan 2025, 17:10In short, I want to move to higher PPI but also have as best motion clarity as I do play competitive fps games. Re: New dual-mode 4K OLED monitors - where/when?
I know and doesn't matter to me for my use case in that mode. It will still look better than my current monitor res in fast pace fps games where detailed look of the scene is not important at all. The mode is mainly for competitive shooters.Discorz wrote: ↑29 Jan 2025, 02:43Did you know that dual modes are blurry? Turns out it's not properly integerly scaled. This one is currently on sale too now. The Asus model is 50% more now when I compare prices and Viewsonic one doesn't exist sadly.
