Does VRR Increase or Decrease Input Lag?

Everything about latency. This section is mainly user/consumer discussion. (Peer-reviewed scientific discussion should go in Laboratory section). Tips, mouse lag, display lag, game engine lag, network lag, whole input lag chain, VSYNC OFF vs VSYNC ON, and more! Input Lag Articles on Blur Busters.

My rule of thumb is: I use VRR as long as I can't at least output double the fps consistently my monitor can display, after which latency decrease in fast turns via teared rendering becomes apparent.
VRR is also great if your game's framerate range fits within the VRR range. There's a latency inconsistency mainly at the VRR-range crossing events (e.g. when framerates try to exceed Hz).

That's why I now recommend people to purchase VRR monitors with a Hz above your game's maximum framerate. This allows you to avoid the latency compromises of various capping methods (even if it's less lag than VRR automatically switching to VSYNC ON when framerates hit maximum Hz).
