G-sync randomly not activating/turning off?

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

G-sync randomly not activating/turning off?

Post by wiseude » 18 Feb 2025, 11:37

I don't know if its even possible but I'm playing kingdome come deliverence 2 and twice so far I noticed the framepacing of the game kinda going bad when looking around and out of curiosity I caught g-sync not working by checking refresh counter on my monitor and I noticed it was not flactuating which means g-sync is not active (even if it's enabled).I have a 4 year old dell S2721DGF for reference.

I alt-tab alot while I play and im wondering if it's possible g-sync is randomly disabling itself without giving me a warning mid game.Restarting the game makes g-sync work again as I can see the refresh rate flactuate so I'm wondering if it''s something going on with the game itself messing with g-sync or the start of a monitor going bad.

I have the same issue. G sync is turning off after monitor sleep. You can also check this by enabling g sync indicator in nvidia control panel on display tab. Have not found solution yet, only disable g sync reboot pc and then enable again.

You can also try restarting the GPU driver. In the SpecialK frontend (SKIF), you can go the "Settings" tab, scroll down where information about your display is shown, right-click there and select the restart driver option. This will reload the GPU driver without needing a reboot.

Dunno if this will actually make g-sync work again, as I never the problem, but it's worth trying.

Ok. For me I think I found the root cause. My windows is not activated and I have this annoying pop up that conflicts with g sync indicator.

The issue progressed into several things.

In alot of games I play I noticed what seems to be something similar to screen tearing (but it's not) it feels almost like a much lesser version of screen tearing, much more subtle and more localized around the middle of the screen/bottom half.Ususally happens when im looking around with the camera or panning the camera around.I even sometimes see it happening when watching a video when there's motion/people moving for a split second in 1 small specific spot on the screen.(pixels not changing fast enough maybe?)

Something similar happens in games I play aswell. For example: I painted light blue line to show where it happens when moving the camera around. It almost feels like there's a subtle transparent transparent line of warping pixel that can't hold itself together around the clear blue lines when panning up and down.Like a much lesser more subtle version of screen tearing like I said.
I especially notice the subtle transparent warping around the UI itself and the bottom edges of the screen when moving the camera around.

What's odd is I noticed something similar on windows 10 UI elements/browsers.

For example I don't know if you can see it in the video but there's a subtle transparent jitter around the UI elements when scrolling up and down and im wondering if it's related aswell.

Also where I marked with a dark blue circle in the picture I noticed an occasional patch of something (VERY subtle patch of Brightness?) on my monitor when scrolling up and down on certain backgrounds.Only noticed it because I was watching a high rez image of a stock photo of a person and while scrolling up and down I noticed a VERY subtle patch of brightness on their skin which stayed on the same spot on the screen as I was scrolling up and down.
I checked with a light if there was a dent or something on that specific spot but there's nothing on the surface of the monitor and it's smooth and flat so im wondering if there's something going on under in that specific spot.

At this point I think it's just a monitor going bad tbh.Too many things happening all at once that look kinda related.
It's the only thing I can think off because I've clean installed w10 4 times/tried multiple different drivers already and I'm using the same nvidia/windows/blur buster g-sync settings I've been using for years without issues until very recently.
