I Can’t Seem To Find A New Gaming Monitor That Doesn’t Kill My Eyes

Post by JRBLRA » 17 Sep 2025, 07:59

So this all started a few months ago when I built my first ever PC. For years I had played on a somewhat cheap Samsung TV, and then an ASUS VG259QR later as my very first gaming monitor.

My first monitor I intended to use with my PC was the ASUS VG259QM. But literally the first day I noticed it caused major strain on my eyes. I feel a burning dryness, the whites of my eyes get veiny and red, and I get a weird fuzzy feeling in my front upper head. I stopped using it about two weeks later as it only got worse, and after many setting adjustments.

The next monitor I tried was an ASUS XG259QNS, but I had the same issues. So then I tried a BenQ Zowie XL2566X+, and again, have had the same issues.

Keep in mind I tried each of these for 3-4 weeks, making setting tweaks every few days, and using low blue light filters too. I’ve since gone back to my old VG259QR, and don’t have the same severity of issues. However, I still have weird feelings in my head from those other monitors I think.

I have seen my ophthalmologist, and my vision is unchanged. I’ve also seen my doctor, who ran a number of tests and a CT scan, all normal results. I will note however I have a major astigmatism in my left eye, and minor in my right. My glasses of course correct them.

In terms of other devices, I have the latest iPad Air model, and have zero issues with it, having had it for more than a year now. I don’t have issues with my old iPhone 8 Plus either, nor my dinky HP Victus laptop.

It feels as though all new monitors hurt my eyes for some reason. I’m wondering if new manufacturing techniques or materials could be a potential culprit. It’s very frustrating though because it has put a real wrench in my PC gaming hobby. I’m mostly a competitive player in Halo in Gears of War, not that it makes a difference.

I’ve seen all sorts of discussions online, but it seems like it could be a million different things? I’ve read if others having similar issues and eventually just giving up and learning to live with it. Is there something I don’t know? I’m just looking for a decent high refresh rate monitor.

As a final note, I have tried all of those other monitors at different HZ settings and distances for ergonomics, but to no avail.

Have you considered opting for more glossier / semi-matte panels? Such as the Q24G2A or Q25G4SR.
Perhaps even glossy OLED panels.

There's also the screen protector approach:

DIthering algorithm could also be a potential culprit, but the information on this for majority of models is completely unknown...

Could you detail PC's hardware & laptop's hardware?
