With new monitors like the MSI MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 supporting 500hz at 1440p in the 24.5 mode and other monitors such as ROG SWIFT OLED PG27AQDP having such detailed internal timings like 2368x1332-480Hz or even the 4:3 "square" timings is there any functional benefit to using these vs using a custom resolution?
I guess my real question is this: I play CS2 at 1024x768 stretched on my 24.5 inch 390hz native 1080p IPS monitor and it seems to handle the in-game resolution fine while still having GPU scaling off in my AMD radeon settings. Could I do the same with these new oled monitors but at the simulated 24.5 inch mode?

"Stretched" resolution is pure garbage in terms objective static picture quality.
The bilinear interprolation that GPU's apply out of the box make these non-native resolutions a complete mess.
Nearest neighbour with integer values (what they refer to online as "Integer Scaling") is also not a solution, as it lowers the PPD of the display substantially.
Use "No-scaling" (NVCPL) / "Center" (AMD) or the "1:1 Pixel" mode (Asus displays) if you want the best image quality (preserving PPD & no inteprolation) at non-native resolutions.

Ah I see, I have an AMD gpu and use CRU to set a custom resolution+ hz and I prefer stretched for this particular game even though objectively the visual quality is worse. My main concern, though, is latency. Do these "simulated" 4:3 resolutions built into the monitor (1024x768, 1280x960) have any advantage over just simply using a custom resolution and center scaling in the AMD settings? (assuming then I did want blackbars and not stretched to make the comparison more simple)
My second question, then, is if I can use the 24.5 mode on the monitor and just simply set my ingame resolution to, say, 1920x1080p (or anything lower than what the max resolution of the supported simulated monitor resolution is) or if this mismatch would incur a latency penalty.
Lasty, I have a separate 21:9 monitor (3440x1440) but when I use the "16:9 mode" in the monitor and set my resolution to 2560x1440p (for better fps) the image quality and text especially is noticeably worse (even though the ppi should be the same?) could this be more a fault of the subpixel layout?
