IPS vs VA vs OLED ?

Post by Enigma » 23 Nov 2025, 04:38

Hi everybody, how you doing? :)

I'm looking to change my dual-monitor setup - each a 31.5" 2560x1440 75Hz IPS by Viewsonic - because I'm tired of looking at those bezels in the center. I thought about upgrading to a 49" 5120x1440 monitor, or downsize to a 3440x1440 monitor to reduce the amount of light my eyes get. We'll see.

Anyway, my wife says I have headaches too much. I tell her it's probably because I'm looking at screens all day: 2 hours on the phone, 6-8 hours working on my PC, and then 2 hours on my S95B OLED at night on the PS5. Shit, that is a lot.

Is it possible that those two massive 32" IPS panels are giving me eye strain? I often find myself squinting my eyes a little when I work, but it may be because there's a very bright window right above them too. I don't know. There's too many confounding factors.

So I was thinking, are there any known issues with either of the panel types when it comes to eye comfort?

I found a 5120x1440 VA 8Bit Acer E1, a 5120x1440 VA 8+2Bit by Samsung G9, and a 5120x1440 Gigabyte Aorus QD-OLED. Not sure which one I should buy to minimize the chances of eye fatigue. I thought the OLED may help because I can just use a black wallpaper and any unused space will be turned off, that is - less overall light hitting my eyes ?

I mostly work. I never game on my PC (I got a PS5 Pro), but I recently bought a 9070XT GPU, though I haven't gamed on it at all since I bought it xD Might try Path of Exile 2 or something to experience "PC Gaming". Was afraid of ghosting in VA panels?

So, I just split all my thoughts :)
Any advice much much much appreciated. Lots of Black Friday deals going on!

Thank you so much.

Hello, I'm New member in this forum.
I had so much time spent looking for a safe monitor but the hunt is hard.

In my case the main problems are 2: Headache and Soreness eyes..the headache
(pressure on temples ) Is more evident with every panel I tested.

My personal suggestions:

1) Avoid KSF phosphor panels, there's strain caused by spikes on red.
This panels generally are used for a wide color gamut.
So check on specs if Adobe RGB is less than 80%
(lower values,.more chances to get a classic WLed panel)

2)! A true 8 bit panel could be better to avoid dithering .
(need investigate about this)

3) A safe OS, because dithering could be problematic in some OS versions.
In my case I can't use Win 11,. it causes strain. I'm stuck on win 10 2021 Ltsc

4) A semy glossy film and not an hard coating could be better for text clarity.

IPS are very bright for my eyes and IPS glow and bleeding are bad for my eyes.
VA are problematic for smearing and blur on gaming.
TN, I never tried one,. I'm curious for Zowie brand.

That's all, but I'm on your same boat.
