Upgrade

Post by petchorin » 30 Nov 2025, 15:40

Hello, I'm thinking about upgrading my display setup and getting something much better than I already have for an ok price. That's why I'm here asking for your elite advice :geek:

My only concern is video smoothness and ease of use, I don't care about colour accuracy for instance.
I spend most of my time in front of my computer so I think oled is not an option.

My main use is to watch movies and series from torrents, also a lot of youtube videos. I just hate tearing, frame dropping, bad blur, I get them too often (although I'm paying less attention lately), and I get motion sick easily when the videos I watch were shot with quick or even slow pannings from left to right /right to left.

I never play any game.
I do some video editing, always at 24 images per second.
Right now I use two monitors :
-Overclocked (@96hz) Qnix 2710 1440p 27"
-22"(or maybe 21") CRT monitor "Iiyama Vison Master Pro514 HM204DT A" I'm using it at 2048*1536 resolution and 85hz.

I use the CRT at high brightness for videos because it seems there's less tearing, but maybe it's only because the monitor is smaller (also less tearing doesn't mean none), and I use the Qnix 2710 1440p 27" at low brightness for everything else because it's sharp and large.

I'm on windows 7 with a HD7850 graphic card, I'm planning on using Linux if I buy a new computer.

Why wait for the new pc to use linux. Start now.

Screen tearing won't matter with vrr + vsync. Infact it wont matter right now with fps caps below your 1% lows. Dont know that number? Just look at the average and turn on the cap near 30% worse than it. 50fps game (35fps).... 30fps cap.

You ae getting screen tearing outside of games??? I did not even know that was possible.
Yeah i really think you should try any linux distro before buying more hardware. I think the main big ones only need a 2 core 1ghz cpu at most to function equally to a modern system. Regarding overclocking monitors on linux... Well you will have to google that. I expect you can. Just google monitor overclock software. And then ___ linux equivalents. Or the same software will have a linux version most likely. The good news is you dont need to get rid of windows. You can use both OS at the same time.

Regarding vrr.... Well again i think it would just be a patch for you. Not the solution. Maybe your cpu is too weak to even run windows 7.
I can't help you with the screen tearing problem as there's a lot of points of failure I'm not familiar with.
