How can I prevent my screen from blanking when restarting or changing resolution/refresh rate?

You can't have a mode switch without blanking.

What about the backlight turning off and on again during a mode switch is that preventable? I’m just worried about the lifespan and wear on it and when you find a good monitor you want to keep it in good nick.

LED backlights don't degrade when you turn them off/on. It's why they're used in motion blur reduction strobing, where they constantly turn off and on hundreds of times per second.
