NVIDIA G-Sync Pulsar monitor - Acer Predator XB273U F5

Hi there!

I recently bought the Acer Predator XB273U F5 (immediately updated to firmware version 1.1.4) and although I’m generally very happy with it and the motion clarity it provides, I wanted to share some feedback:

Refresh Rate Capping (Single Monitor)

When G-SYNC Pulsar is enabled, the monitor’s refresh rate caps itself at around 320–321 Hz in-game, even if V-Sync is disabled and frame rates are comfortably higher (322 FPS and beyond).
  • It doesn’t matter whether in-game Reflex is set to ON, ON+BOOST, or OFF.
  • It doesn’t matter whether NVCP Low Latency Mode is set to ON, OFF, or ULTRA.
  • It doesn’t matter if V-Sync is disabled in-game and forced OFF in NVCP.
The only thing that seems to “override” this behavior is connecting a second monitor.

Behavior With Second Monitor Connected

When a second monitor is connected, G-SYNC Pulsar caps the refresh rate to the intended maximum 360 Hz (as long as you’re above 360 FPS in any game). From that point on, G-SYNC Pulsar behaves normally, just like any other “vanilla G-SYNC” monitor.

Render Latency Measurements

(Aimbeast, UE4 title with Reflex available, RLAT via Nvidia app)
  • V-Sync OFF: >1200 FPS consistently, ~0.5 ms render latency.
  • V-Sync ON: Caps FPS to 360, eliminates tearing, render latency rises to 4.5 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + NVCP LLM ON: Keeps 360 FPS, reduces latency to 2.7 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + NVCP LLM ULTRA: Caps refresh rate and FPS to 327, latency ~0.5 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + Reflex ON/ON+BOOST: Caps refresh rate and FPS to 327, latency ~0.5 ms.
Observations Without Second Monitor

As soon as the second monitor is disconnected, the Pulsar caps itself again at 320–321 Hz in-game, even if V-Sync is disabled and FPS are higher. Render latency remains ~0.5 ms with V-Sync OFF.

However, enabling V-Sync changes things drastically:
  • V-Sync ON: Caps refresh rate and FPS to 321, eliminates tearing, latency jumps to 5.4 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + NVCP LLM ON: No effect, still capped at 321 Hz/FPS, latency remains 5.4 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + NVCP LLM ULTRA: Still capped at 321 Hz/FPS, latency reduced to 3.1 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + Reflex ON: Still capped at 321 Hz/FPS, latency ~4.7 ms.
  • V-Sync ON + Reflex ON+BOOST: Still capped at 321 Hz/FPS, but latency fluctuates erratically between 1.4 ms and 5.2 ms, second to second.
Interesting Findings

Introducing an FPS cap of 310 (either in-game or externally via RTSS Async) brings render latency back down to 0.5 ms. There is no tearing even with V-Sync OFF, because Pulsar remains engaged and working within its VRR range.

You can also push the FPS cap low enough to trigger the “Pulsar Low FPS” limit. In my case, that limit is set to 75, but the practical threshold is 79. As soon as I step down to 78 FPS, Pulsar very noticeably disengages. The difference in motion clarity is incredibly obvious — Pulsar really works wonders at such low framerates.

All of the above behaviors are reproducible in every game I tested that is not hard-locked to 60 FPS natively.

Test Environment

Tested with an RTX 5090 using the latest available drivers (596.21) on Windows 11 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8246).

  • Out of curiosity, I tried overclocking the monitor's refresh rate and discovered that my unit will go up to 587 Hz. Which is nuts, to be honest! However, doing so effectively disables both Pulsar functionality and VRR.
Regardless, I think it's pretty cool to see an IPS panel of this nature working at those speeds. Even without the motion clarity benefits of Pulsar and the convenience of VRR, the smoothness at such a high refresh rate is quite impressive.
  • I also found that overclocking the panel to 363Hz is as far as my unit will go while still maintaining Pulsar functionality and VRR.

It displays fine at 587hz? I want to try this now, I have the same Acer monitor. How can I test this?

Can you test your fullscreen white brightness by any chance? Mine goes to 570 nits, wondered if all the Acer Predators all go that high too?

It appeared so at first glance, but frameskipping does exist while at 587hz.

Fortunately, you can pre‑test the created “custom resolution” each time before confirming and adding it.

Note 1: I only changed the refresh‑rate values; I didn’t modify anything else and left the “timing” setting on automatic. It’s also worth mentioning that I used small stepped increments until I arrived at that value.

Note 2: Regarding my panel’s maximum brightness, I don’t have the proper equipment to measure it accurately. If any Android light‑meter app can serve as a rough reference, mine reports 57 cd/ft², which converts to 613.54 nits. However, I seriously doubt this figure is anywhere close to reality.

You nailed it—frame skipping definitely occurs at 587 Hz.

However, a quick test at 363 Hz seems stable.

Edit: After further testing, it appears that 388 Hz is the maximum refresh rate this panel can handle without frame skipping.

Alt-tabbing to the desktop or another application also temporarily overrides this behavior when using a single monitor.

As soon as you alt-tab out of a game, the refresh rate switches from 321 Hz to 360 Hz, and when you alt-tab back in, it reverts to 321 Hz exactly 30 seconds later, which seems odd and entirely arbitrary.


I also did further latency testing in Hades 2 (Single Monitor) using the RTSS Reflex Overlay.

  • V-Sync OFF: 360 fps in-game cap, refresh rate 320/321 Hz, noticeable screen tearing. Sim to Render Latency 3.1 ms

Note1:

V‑Sync ON/OFF made no difference when using RTSS ASYNC cap set to 310 fps. There was no screen tearing either way, and latency was the same.

Note2:

Using RTSS ASYNC cap set to 310 also "fixes" the refresh rate and fps desync that happens when Alt‑Tabbing.

Interestingly, RTSS Reflex (before/after frame presentation) does not do that. Both presentation methods have more Sim‑to‑Render latency than ASYNC, which is also weird. Normally, using an RTSS Reflex cap (with a regular, non‑Pulsar monitor) would have better Sim‑to‑Render latency, with "after frame presentation" having a slight edge.

  • V-Sync OFF: Unlocked framerate, refresh rate 320/321 Hz, noticeable screen tearing. Sim to Render Latency 2.6 ms

Hey guys, haven't found many other posts online regarding the XB27U3 F5 so might as well try this one.

I've been unable to update my firmware as the Micro USB port that the monitor should have is blocked on my unit. Could you please confirm if your unit has said Micro USB port acessible?

I've found a reference photo online of the back I/O of the monitor both with the Micro USB port visible and blocked. Also tried contacting Acer's customer support and they replied telling me that the firmware supposedly could be update by using the USB Tybe-B cable, though I've tried that and the NVIDIA web solution for firmware update didn't recognize my monitor.

After informing Acer's support of said situation, they changed their stance and is now claiming that the XB273U F5 is not user serviceable and is a 'plug-and-play' monitor, with all features already working as intended and not firmware upgradable. Which, needless to say, is insane. They've gone as far as saying that the updated 60Hz lower-bound should be handled through my 'GPU drivers and Windows environment'. Honestly, I'm baffled by their response.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, they stated that if I were to remove said plastic cap, I'd have my warranty voided.

I'm compiling information to bring awareness to this issue and hopefully have it fixed for others.

I just peeled off that "hard plastic sticker" and updated my monitor without any issues.

What Acer told you is absolutely shameless, and those claims could even expose them to legal challenges.

I understand your situation as there’s no official information provided by Acer regarding this matter.

The only legitimate source I could find for updating the monitor’s firmware is found in the "NVIDIA G-SYNC Pulsar Monitor Firmware Update" website.
