PG258Q vs XL2546 for MOBA/FPS/RHYTHM Games

Post by CuoReNeRo » 30 Apr 2019, 11:15

Hi! :)

Intruduction:

I mainly play League of Legends, but i play other games too: FPS like Apex Legends and rhythm games like OSUMANIA!. I have motion sickness since ages: my last FPS game was Unreal Tournament, and every FPS game i tried caused me issues after 30 min of playing. Don't ask me why because i don't know at all, but i can play Apex Legends for hours, and it's the first FPS since years which i can play. I play sometimes other games like "Shadow of Tomb Raider" and similar, and sometimes i saw some movies.

Needs:

At the moment i have Syncmaster PX2370, a really old monitor, so it's the time to upgrade it :D Here you are my priorities:

1) Motion-Blur reduction (for motion sickness);
2) Lag reduction for LOL (panning?);
3) Lag reduction for OSU (stuttering/input-lag?);
4) Lag reduction for Apex Legends (input-lag?);
5) Quality (when playing TombRaider similar games/seeing movies);

The point is: I want a Monitor which allow me to keep playing Apex (with maybe better Motion-Blur reduction of my old monitor and with a better lag reduction, 60Hz are killing me XD), and who knows, maybe allowing me to play some other FPS. I never played with another monitor at League of Legends, so i can't understand what "lags" means on this game, but due the fact it's my main game, i'm searching something which can improve my gameplay in terms of lag.

I play a lot OSU (and some other rhythm games like Stepmania), and i feel HUGE lag playing on my 60Hz when i increase scroll speed with hard charts: this is something important i'd like to fix.

Quality is the last thing i'm searching, but keep in mind i'm not a E-Sport Player, i'm not playing in competitive for money, so getting something which let my games looking good instead a micro improve about input lag (noticeable for competitive FPS players maybe, but not for me) would be better for me.

My Setup:

POWER SUPPLY ► Corsair RM750
CPU ► Intel Core i7-4790k @4GHz
MOTHERBOARD ► Asus Z97-A
RAM ► Corsair Vengeance® Pro Series 16,0GB
Graphic Card ► Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX2070 O8G
Mouse ► Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum

Budget:

around 500€

Monitors:

After reading a lot of threads/articles on BlurBusters, i suppose a 1080p 240Hz is the best choice for my HW config and my needs. So, i suppose those are the 2 best monitors i could get:

ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q
BenQ XL2546

Honor mentions at those ones:

ASUS ROG Strix XG258Q
Alienware AW2518H
Acer Predator XB252Q

Question:

HELP ME :D Which ones i should get? And why? Hope some people will answer me, and Chief Blur Buster himself too ;)

At last but not the least: sorry for my english, i hope you'll get it what i mean with my thread :P

Your original Samsung monitor is also a TN panel, so you'll be sticking with a TN panel that ends up being (hopefully) huge upgrade.

You might be getting motion sickness from various factors such as motion blur, or stutter.

Recommendation: "Maximize Your Configurable Options"
- You definitely want access to PWM-free dimming (all new gaming monitors has this), just in case it is affecting your motion sickness
- You definitely want access to motion blur reduction, just in case it is affecting your motion sickness
- You definitely want access to variable refresh rate (GSYNC), just in case it is affecting your motion sickness

For your full-framerate games (games able to run at framerates matching refresh rate), you probably will want to use VSYNC ON for motion fluidity, and compensate for VSYNC ON latency simply by sheer GPU and sheer refresh rate. Avoiding tearing/stutters can reduce your motion sickness. But yes, VSYNC ON can add a bit of lag. That said, the good news is that quadrupling your refresh rate and frame rate will reduce VSYNC ON lag by roughly 75%. Now instead of using VSYNC ON you can use variable refresh rate because it make varying framerate as smooth as permanent consistent VSYNC ON. Variable refresh rate looks like http://www.testufo.com/gsync (view this on desktop), GSYNC can erase the stutters between frame rate changes, that can help you too.

So your favourite modes will probably end up being:
- For your high/consistent framerate games (running always 240fps), you'll want to use motion blur reduction such as ULMB
- For your stuttery/fluctuating framerate games (varying 50fps-200fps), you'll want to use GSYNC
The great news is you can switch between G-SYNC and ULMB.

XL2546 is a really great blur-reduction monitor but it doesn't have GSYNC, if your priority is eye comfort (to keep your options open). You shouldn't rely only on motion blur reduction because so many games benefit more from GSYNC than blur reduction. (And besides, 240fps without strobing already reduce motion blur by 75% relative to 60fps). The "Blur Busters Law" mathematics means doubling framerate halves motion blur, so quadrupling framerate reduces non-strobed motion blur by 75%. So you're already getting at least /some/ motion blur reduction simply via sheer framerate --- and your priority should also to have an option to eliminate stutters too. GSYNC lets you be able to do that, since GSYNC is like a soft pillow for stutters.

Since you have an NVIDIA product, I'd recommend a native GSYNC monitor.
Your mentioned ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q would probably meet your needs.

PG258Q 180Hz G-SYNC ?
XL2546 there is no way to activate freesync?
It seems to me that I did not get enough sleep.
I often do not clearly state my thoughts. google translate is far from perfect. And in addition to the translator, I myself am mistaken. Do not take me seriously.

Benq XL2546 does not have VRR (Gsync/FreeSYnc). The previous XL2540 model had, but they replaced it with Dyac, as Benq thinks everyone buying a Dyac monitor needs to use it (I don´t agree ofc).

I guess Chief wanted to mention PG248Q instead? Wich is an overclocked 144hz monitor to 180hz. PG258Q is 240hz for sure!

Idk, there´s no mentioning of FreeSync on their website and people here had trouble getting it to work too: viewtopic.php?t=3369
