Poll- What is your prefered monitor size for FPS gaming?

Post by Notty_PT » 23 May 2019, 11:05

Hi! I´m creating this simple poll as I´m curious about what monitor size you prefer. I said several times on this forum how I don´t like 25 inches monitors (the current 240hz monitors are all 25 inches apart from XG24) and above. Isn´t only about PPI, but also about eye strain. Yesterday I had a long gaming session wich I didn´t for some time now (around 4 hours) and I ended up with massive eye strain and headache from it. After 2 hours I was struggling to spot everything on the monitor (corners, map, overall awareness). I use the monitor really far away from my eyes as my desk is fairly big, but it still doesn´t help me.

As soon as I switch to a smaller screen like the XG248Q or XG2402 (23,8 inches and 24 inches), I have no problems anymore.

I wish AUO would stop releasing so many 24,5 inches panels, as their new 144hz and 240hz counterparts are still 24,5, and basically almost every new model has that size. There are few exceptions tho:

- Asus XG248Q 240hz using Innolux panel
- LG 24GL600F 144hz using a new LG panel, wich is 23,6 inches (seems perfect, I need to test it)
- Asus VG248QG 165hz using a 24 inches panel from AUO

I would like to know your input about this, do you have eye strain or lack of awareness or even motion sickness by using a bigger than 24 inches monitor on a long gaming session? Do you prefer bigger or smaller screens? How can you still be aware of everything, any tips?

Just to let you know that this has nothing to do with brightness levels or colour configurations, as I use basically the same brightness across all my monitors.

I love the Asus XG258Q because of its ultra low input lag, but I´m debating wether I should get rid of it or not, because my eyes can´t stand this size on a desk and altho my aim is good when I start playing, it deteorates quickly and my awareness is really bad.

Thanks!

I would prefer 27. I keep my 25 quite close and believe it's probably healthier to focus farther away. However the 25 appeared to be the best all-around 240hz when I bought mine and I'm waiting for a nice looking 0.5ms before I buy another.

Me too - tftcentral posted yesterday 2 new .5ms being announced - one AOC and one Acer Predator. So hopefully they will be available soon.

And how can you guys be aware of everything that is going around you? What games do you guys play more and what´s your performance on them usually? Thanks!

I play overwatch mostly for competitive games. My rank is usually plat to masters depending on how much I play. If I play at least a couple hours a day I make it to masters in a few weeks and if I stop playing and come back I usually have trouble getting above 50% wr at 3000 sr. I don't seem to be limited on awareness by the 25. I keep it close to my face and use the default 103 fov. I use 240hz vsync off with in game limiter set to 241fps and reduce buffering on.

For me 24" is a the sweet spot for competitive fps, but I don't really mind the 25" now that I'm used to it. For others games, even fps single player experience, I really enjoy my 27".

Another factor: Your desk and your vision.

If your desk is deep enough you can adjust viewing distance too.

27" viewing from a 27" monitor is the exact same FOV as 23" viewing from a 23" monitor. If you are nearsighted or farsighted, you may have a preference towards a smaller or bigger size. The limiting factor is simply how deep your desk is, so you can push a bigger monitor monitor further back. Heck, some PC gaming players play using a 48 inch TV about 48 inches away. If you're farsighted, it can be easier.

That said, if you're travelling to LAN parties or competitive events, the 24 inch monitor is preferred over 27 inch by many pro players.

It really depends on the depth of your desk. One should buy a monitor with a size that is adecuate to the distance available.
The same way you would not buy a small TV with huge distance to the couch.

How much depth your desk has ?
If you have eye strain, maybe the distance is still not enough. I don't see how size could give you eye strain.
Try to place it further away by rotating your desk and using the width as depth or use your dinner table. If you keep getting eye strain it's something else about the monitor.

My monitor is 24,5'' and my desk 75cm (29,5'') depth.
I don't suffer from eye strain and my game awareness is ok but I would prefer a desk with more depth because I feel it's still too close.
I usually play at night at least 2 hours and use blue light filter at maximum level to avoid putting strain on eyes if they are tired.
Also, make sure your hud items are big enough if you can configure their size.

It's a function of your vision prescription -- farsightedness and nearsightedness. If you're borderline nearsighted without eye glasses, a distant monitor can have more eyestrain. If you're borderline farsighted without eye glasses, a near monitor can have more eyestrain.
Or if you do wear glasses or contacts, your prescription might have a focus comfort range that favours specific distance ranges. Reading glasses? Driving glasses? One set of glasses? Etc.

Assuming your desk is deep enough to give you choice of viewing distances; this can lead to a favourable screen size for a given view distance.
