300 Hz soon. 480 or 1000 Hz when?

Post by roo7 » 05 Sep 2019, 00:49

I saw that AUO sends out a new 300 Hz panel to the gaming laptops from ASUS and alike.
Do you guys have any information if and when we can expect a 300 Hz monitor or even new 480 or 1000 Hz panels?

I was about to buy a 240 Hz for CS:GO but now i might just wait for the sweet extra 60 frames per second.
Take my money and gimme that "advantage"!

Blur Busters Law: The Amazing Journey To Future 1000Hz Displays
1000 Hz: The Journey Begins (forum thread)

These are the original predictions that Chief made in 2017:

Code: Select all

Indie manufacturers
First 240Hz -- 2013
First 480Hz -- 2017
First 1000Hz -- 2020 (predicted)

Mainstream manufacturers
First 120Hz -- 2009
First 240Hz -- 2016
First 480Hz -- 2020 (predicted)
First 1000Hz -- 2025 (predicted)
And from the looks of it we might actually see first 480Hz monitors being available in 2020-2021. Unless of course manufacturers will choose to do a "milking" approach / strategy with the consumers, and will gradually offer something like 300Hz, 360Hz, 400Hz etc. instead of doing a big jump to 480Hz.

There's a bit of fudge factor, but yes.

In the optimistic scenario, the Refresh Rate Race is as I describe above.

In a more pessimistic scenario, the Refresh Rate Race is a doubling of Hz every 10 years.

Is it worth waiting? Hard to say. The GPU race needs time to catch up to frame rate amplification technologies, which needs more time to catch up. ~2022-ish is probably when 480 Hz becomes "Worth It". Give or take some years earlier or later.

A concerted effort can easily speed up the refresh rate race.
