ASUS PG258Q Monitor - Which are the best settings for the lowest input lag for Competitive gaming?

Post by Lilac » 22 Mar 2020, 12:59

I play a lot of competitive shooters such as CS:GO, Apex Legends, Overwatch, etc. and I'd like to know which settings are the best (incl. in-game settings, and NVCP settings) to get the lowest input lag possible. Should I use G-Sync or no sync at all?

Some information: I can get constant 240 FPS in every game I play. I play with uncapped my fps.
My current NVCP settings can be found here: https://imgur.com/AZmyY6Z. Thanks in advance!

I'd be glad to help.
If you just want lowest absolute lag, VSYNC OFF is your buddy. But it comes with various drawbacks.

Try visiting www.prosettings.net for your favourite settings for your favourite game. It's a great indication of how the professionals play. Met the founder of ProSettings last year ago while I was travelling in Taiwan visiting ViewSonic headquarters. Most do use VSYNC OFF, mind you -- but it depends on the game.

______________

Below the surface, the question is not simple to answer.

Lowest absolute lag?
--or--
Latency volatility/stability/consistency?

Sometimes these are mutually exclusive, which is why some people prefer VSYNC OFF for CS:GO and some people prefer 240Hz G-SYNC for PUBG, etc. And if you need better latency consistency, sometimes you need to go to a synchronized sync technology such as RTSS Scanline Sync, or a low-capped VRR technology (e.g. 100fps cap or 150fps cap on a 240Hz monitor) to have the world's lowest-lag "VSYNC ON equivalent" technology.

There are some pick-poison settings for specific games. Sometimes you get low lag but massively worse stutter. Steady medium-low lag is sometimes better than highly variable lower lag, as long as it's within a margin. Some games just simply stutter so badly, or other games just are much more easily playable with a different sync setting (e.g. poorly optimized engines, major PUBG stutters that wreck aiming, etc).
