Help Me Pick: PG278QR vs. PG279Q

Post by catwatch » 19 Apr 2020, 18:24

So I upgraded to 9900k and 2080 TI. I have been using ASUS VG248QE for many years now and have been pretty happy, but I'm looking to make the switch to 1440p. Keep in mind I have never used an IPS Panel in the past so I can't really compare color differences I'd notice in TN vs. IPS. I play games a lot, do photoshop, some video editing, and will be using new monitor for movies as well. I'd say primarily though for gaming. Would it make sense to go from VG248QE to PG278QR considering it would be TN -> TN?

I've been contemplating which to go with for days now and I can't decide. Please help me make up my mind!

I actually own the PG279Q, and I have to say it's an amazing screen. If your doing Photoshop, watching movies and editing, IPS panel is really nice compare to TN panel. And PG279Q is one of the best IPS 165hz on the market. It is also really good for gaming (I am actually using it right now, playing Valorant, Overwatch, and some AAA titles).
I am looking for a 240hz right now, so I will sell it, but man I wish I could kept it.
Feel free to ask me some questions.

You will notice the increase from 1ms TN to 3ms IPS, in that the visible difference between 144Hz vs 165Hz will be much smaller on the PG279Q versus PG278QR. As a rule of thumb, GtG needs to be a tiny fraction of the refresh rate cycle, to prevent interfering with motion clarity.

PG278QR is a pretty good 1440p monitor. A bit of an older model but it's good if you're familiar with the VG248QE -- pretty much home territory for you in a resolution upgrade.

What types of games do you play?

I have owned the pg278q back when it came out and honestly after trying multiple panels since then, its safe to say that this was the best panel I performed with in competitive battlefield 4 for the most part or anything else online. I have tried the pg279q, Chief is correct you will notice a difference it does feel a little bit slower. With the pg278q I was almost unstoppable and very difficult to kill even by other top players including say players from Fnatic a top team..I have recently tried the benq xl2746s which I am returning.. for the pg278qR.. found a good deal on ebay someone was selling it barely used it in original box..The xl2746s was good but 1080p is not nice like the pg27's even using DirtyScrubz's perfect calibration..Also, I felt that dyac+ was not anywhere near as good as a real gsync module.....My pg278qr comes monday, I know that this is an incredible panel and you can calibrate it to near ips colors. ... You can absolutely notice a difference between the pg279q and the pg278q .. with the pg278qr being 165hz, there is no way it will beat the pg279q's numbers as far as input lag now. There are even a few tests that have been done if you search google you can find some reviews some people have tested the lag between these 2. 278qr wins now 100%.

I had a PG278Q and now have a PG279Q. The PG278Q was great when it first came out, but there were some really annoying problems. Mine had a dark spot near the lower right hand corner. If you looked on a white page, there was literally a spot that was darker than the rest of the screen. After researching this, it wasn't just my screen that had it. The dark spot issue was actually common. The anti-glare coating was FAR too aggressive. It gave the image a sparkly, dirty look. The image looked less sharp than on the the PG279Q because of this. It also has more input lag than the PG279Q. The colors on the PG278Q were much worse as well. The image on the PG278Q was washed out, just like pretty much any other TN panel. All in all, the PG279Q is just a much better monitor all around. I thought that I would have an issue because TN's are usually faster than IPS, but the PG279Q is actually faster than the PG278Q when it comes to input lag. When it comes to blur, it is really a trade off. I say this because the overall blur is a tad bit worse on the PG279Q, but the PG278Q has overshoot that is noticeable during normal use.

Blur and overshoot: https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/as ... omparisons

EDIT: Both of those links have comparisons for both of these monitors.

update: I gave the new benq xl2746s one more chance before I sent it back and it is absolutely far better than the pg279q so I won't even bother with the pg278q.. The benq panel with the blurbusters strobe utlity enable AMA to be used at max with pretty much 0 blur, via ghosting tests and in game....after using the pg279q for a few days and going back to the 240hz xl2746s I was able to tell that the difference in frames between 165 and 240hz is tremendous. dyac+ running with frames uncapped does give a near screen tear free experience in multiplayer for sure. the benq wins this one. and like I said with dirtyscrubz's setup, i've got the benq panel calibrated to look VERY close to IPS with those 8 bit colors !

here are a couple of battle reports after playing with dyac+ and AMA on PREMIUM after using blurbusters strobe utility ! When I saw I can really see people head-glitching behind obstacles from a distance, I'm not kidding. Dyac+ is delivering as advertised.
