Which monitor to buy?
Which monitor to buy?
hello, ive read a bit on the site already. first off: i got a samsung 2233rz 120 monitor now. first i planned on buying a new monitor that support lightboost, but today ive read that blur buster utility that is supposed to be even better
so my question: is it even worth upgrading from my 120hz monitor. and 2nd question: whats better, a monitor that supports lightboost or that supports that utility. and then which monitor would u recommend to me?

There are now four brands that use the same mechanism to reduce motion blur:naivaklam wrote:hello, ive read a bit on the site already. first off: i got a samsung 2233rz 120 monitor now. first i planned on buying a new monitor that support lightboost, but today ive read that blur buster utility that is supposed to be even better

- LightBoost (unofficial)
- ULMB (official)
- Turbo240 (official)
- BENQ Blur Reduction (official)
Yes, the BENQ Blur Reduction (if you get Version 2), is better than LightBoost, if you calibrate using Strobe Utility.
The later 3 are second-generation, while the first one is first-generation It's worth buying a newer LightBoost-like technologies, which often perform better, brighter, and with better colors than LightBoost. The newer technologies are also listed in the Official 120Hz Monitor List.

Re: Which monitor to buy?
I just ordered a VG278HE.
I got bored with G-Sync waiting game - at least 3 months more for 24" or 27" 1080p, correct?. Also, it was dirt cheap - nearly the same price as VG248QE/XL2411Z. I just hope it will be defects free, because it is out of stock and they can't exchange it.
(just money return)
27" should be perfect for my eyes since I sit ~1.2m from the screen. As a student, I don't really want to pay at least 50% extra (from the amount I payed) for newer panel with the G-Sync.

Re: Which monitor to buy?
Among LightBoost models, it's certainly one of the better models. It will produce a better LightBoost image than the ASUS VG248QE, so a good stopgap monitor while waiting for the GSYNC flood to begin (just a tad delayed, I must admit!).

Re: Which monitor to buy?
Ahh, got mine VG278HE. It's perfect, so smooooth... Strobe is great - not getting any headaches or eye fatigue, colors are pretty much the same as in "normal mode", didn't notice any artifacts etc. No stuck or dead pixels. Slight, uniform BLB around the edges - not a big deal tbh.
I expected the worst when I opened it. I'm sure it was returned before (it's even missing a screw for the stand - not a big deal, because I VESA mount it), but it was 20% cheaper after all. Very good buy, I'm happy I didn't wait for XL2411Z V2 or G-Sync monitors!

Re: Which monitor to buy?
Glad you are happy! VG248QE users are often stuck with a crimson tint in LightBoost, so paying a tiny bit more on other models, such as the the VG278HE which is the next cheapest LightBoost without the ugly color issue.
Now you can wait until the GSYNC flood eventually hits and the tech matures some more!

great, thanks for the help
Re: Which monitor to buy?
hi again, got one more question: what is actually the better technology: G-Sync or BR from Benq?
ill prolly buy a benq xl2411z though, since the gsync model seems quite expensive

Re: Which monitor to buy?
GSYNC has the potential to be superior, especially when it's widespread in release monitors. You get both GSYNC (stutter/tearing reduction) and ULMB (motion blur reduction, like LightBoost/BENQ BR) in these monitors. But it is going to take quite a while to arrive; all the GSYNC monitors are delayed longer than expected.naivaklam wrote:hi again, got one more question: what is actually the better technology: G-Sync or BR from Benq?

However, I have no idea if GSYNC monitors will have adjustable-persistence ULMB in the future (I'm trying to coax the vendors to include adjustable persistence with ULMB). The precedent that Blur Busters has set with Strobe Utility, will likely help convince the vendors to include the much-wanted power-user adjustments for hard-core motion blur reduction nuts like us.
If your goal is eliminating motion blur (above all else) during high frame rates, the current winner is BENQ Blur Reduction Version 2.
If your goal is eliminating tearing and stutters, during low framerate and variable frame rate situations, GSYNC will be better for that.
Watch List of GSYNC Monitors; this list will be updated when the GSYNC monitors arrive, the ASUS ROG PG278Q will arrive mid-year 2014 plus probably a direct-from-factory G-SYNC variant of VG248QE, then most of the rest wont arrive until very late 2014. GSYNC, a great tech, is still taking a while to arrive.
In the meantime, Official List of 120Hz and 144Hz Monitors lists all the currently-selling 120Hz desktop monitors in existence at the moment (and some past models).

Re: Which monitor to buy?
great, thanks a lot. yes, for me it is most important to remove motion blur at high frame rates.
one more question, since it seems hard to get that MSTAR ISP in germany: ive just read the manual for doing that update by yourself. is it right that i just need this

and a vga cable? and if so, whats this called? LPT-D-Sub adapter or something? :p
