Nvidia Display Scaling on XL2420Z through Displayport

Post by minion » 26 Oct 2020, 12:33

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to narrow down the reasons why my Nvidia Control Panel (NVCP) doesn't allow for Display Scaling on my XL2420Z (setup info down below).
Tried a lot of forced display scaling tutorials (through CRU). The problem is that these guides assumes you have the display scaling available and selected on your NVCP.
Following them resuls in 1920x1080 on the Active Signal Output info on Windows Immersive Control Panel (Win+I => System => Display => Advanced Display Settings), no matter the resolution I'm in. Also, Benq OSD shows current 1920x1080.

Environment:
Display: BenQ XL2420Z V002
SO: Windows 10 v1903
NVDrivers: 456.71
CPU: i7-9700k
GPU: GTX1070Ti
Video cable: Ugreen Displayport 1.4

Why?
I mainly play CSGO. But this came to light as pro Fortnite players started playing on low and streched resolutions on their end.
Watching some new videos around GPU vs Display Scaling (looking at you FR33THY), there's not much proof on how it affects the input lag, but they say the feeling is more responsive and smoother (if not better overall quality, depending on the monitor).

It actually makes sense, if a monitor have a good resolution scaler, hardware solutions can unload the process made on software/drivers alone. I remember also having distinguish experiences between these options, and wanted to give it another go. But I'm unable since windows 8.1.

Having friends from the same niche, I love helping them tweak their setups

TL;DR
Why the BenQ XL2420Z V002 doesn't allow Display Scaling? Is it the DP cable? NVidia drivers are buggy? Windows 10 forced WME.exe?

I asked about PM, because I'm not sure it will work and i have few methods for that, Have had both problems with that (xl2411z dvi cable and no display scaling availible and omen x25f DP cable and display scaling availible but it was still gpu scaled).

For Omen i simply added detailed resolution that will be display scaled, as example 1024x768@240, it must be with Native timings in CRU. But it won't work when Display scaling is not showing.

Yeah, that's the same behaviour my setup is showing.
GPU scaling option in NVCP locks on the scaler even with custom resolutions and native timings* configured in CRU. Makes sense.
The question still remains: why display scaling option isn't available?

* Assuming native timings are the ones already present the monitor's profile (CRU)

Delete everything in CRU, restart64.exe and then add detailed resolution, restart again. Try that

Hey, just did as you said and:

After deleting everything on CRU:
  • screen goes to standard/TV 1920x1080@60hz
  • Display scaling is detected on NVCP
And after inserting one detailed res (1024x768@120hz):
  • Screen remais on standard/TV 1920x1080@60hz
  • Display scaling is NOT detected anymore on NVCP
  • Changing res (inside NVCP) to the new custom one forces Display Scaling on desktop (Windows Imersive shows correct Active Output Signal, NVCP is with NO SCALING option checked and my monitor is showing fullscreen)
The thing is, after inserting a 1920x1080@144hz in NVCP or CRU (detailed or extension), the DS doesn't work anymore
I wish I could keep my 1080p@144hz...

If you play from lower resolutions instead of the native 1920x1080, I'd say the difference is quite noticeable!

I have the same monitor with same firmware.

Using windows 10 it's the same for me.
with windows 7 monitor scaling is available in NVCP after adding detailed resolutions in cru & NVCP custom resolutions tab.
