Console Input Lag Question

Post by Jazzin » 10 Mar 2021, 21:05

Hi,

I have been doing some research on purchasing a new monitor for an Xbox Series X, when I came across this sight. Specifically this post regarding the large input lag of the ASUS VG279QM. viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7143&start=10

The site admin explained himself very well. In the post he said the following:
60fps at 60Hz on a 240Hz panel can sometimes be more laggy than 60fps at 60Hz on a native 60Hz panel

BUT

60fps at 240Hz on a 240Hz panel will be less laggy than 60fps at 60Hz on a native 60Hz panel.
I want to make sure I understood this correctly and how it would apply to a console (Xbox series x).

So the series x can run up to 120hz. However, a vast majority of the games currently can only run at 30/60fps.
There is a dropdown in the settings of the Xbox that you could use to change the refresh rate between 60hz and 120hz.
  1. So according to the quote above, as long as I have the xbox set to 120hz with a 120hz panel, there will not be a large amount of input lag playing a game as 30 or 60 fps?

(There are not many monitors with 120hz max, as most have 144hz, 165hz, 240hz.)

    2. Would there be a large amount of input lag if I was playing a game at 60fps with the console set to 120hz on a 144hz panel? What about 240hz panel?

    3. Is there a way to manually lower a panel with 240hz max down to specifically 120hz max?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are few 240 Hz panels that has low-lag native 60 Hz.

Horizontal-scanrate-multisync include ASUS XG258Q and an unreleased 240 Hz IPS monitor that I will have more to announce about soon (hint, hint).

I am not sure if VG279QM is fixed-scanrate (buffers signal and then refreshes all refresh rates in 1/280sec) or scanrate-multisync (slows down its scanout to match signal Hz).

But panels like the older ASUS PG258Q, is fixed-scanrate and thus adds a bit of input lag to all gaming consoles.

RTINGS is very good at publishing data about whether 60Hz has high lag or low lag, but alas, they hadn't tested the XG258Q AFAIK.
