SILKY SMOOTH HIGH REFRESH RATE GAMING

Post by uroshnish » 21 Mar 2021, 07:54

Hello, I've managed to identify and solve big issue in high refresh rate gaming.
I believe we need to bring this topic up to important people to see what is root of the problem and what can be done to fix it.
I will try to keep this short and self explanatory, please help this thread become visible by upvoting.

We all want smooth gaming experience. This is especially important in FPS titles.
Having high refresh monitor is only one part of the story as I found out.
I'm using high refresh monitor for gaming for a very long time, and I always felt it's not as smooth as it "should" be.
Issue and solution I'm talking about is on AMD CPUs, someone can test and confirm these results on Intel with HT off.

So let's get to it!

DISABLING Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) gives you SILKY SMOOTH high refresh rate gaming.

It's day and night difference, it's like going from 60Hz to 144Hz for real this time, you FEEL it.

Now, you can go on and test this for yourself and report here with results.

I made a reddit post with same text that if I'm allowed will link so you can upvote and help it be visible. Thanks!

SMT shouldn't have any big effect on anything. What's your CPU?

Sure, just remove the "https://www.reddit.com" part from the link and I'll edit it.

I want to apologize, after enabling, disabling a few more times, I think SMT on works fine. It must have been some bug that made games not feel smooth. But def I fixed it by changing SMT off/on I guess, because I didn't change anything else

I'm sure it wasn't placebo, something was bugging out for sure, and it was happening for a while I couldn't find out what it was...
BTW Specs are: R9 5900X, NVIDIA 3080, 16GB 3200Mhz RAM

It was theoretically possible that Windows was doing something incredibly derpy with the scheduling of threads, and causing some frames to be simulated at uneven times. Possible, but unlikely. After all, other than the graphics thread being asynchronous from the sim thread, it's not like games have multiple simulations being worked on at the same time.

You probably just had some weird background processes running that sucked up your CPU power at the time. This might have done something, because I can see Windows derping up and not ideally distributing the core cache properly in such a situation. So possibly it was that.
