Hi everyone,
First post, what a site and forum so much content, I have spent lots of the weekend reading articles here and learned lots.
I used to be a competitive pc sim racer and had an early ish 120hz monitor to give sharper controls, a side effect of 120 FPS gaming was also much improved motion clarity, almost CRT like.
Yesterday, I tried my old LG 120hz 1080p monitor on my series x for the first time with a 120fps game , rainbow six siege. ( With the help of an HDMI to display port cable) To be honest I wish I hadn't as the motion clarity and detail when panning is markedly improved at 120hz/FPS and took me back to my PC days. For the last few months I have been enjoying the series X with 60fps games and ignoring the motion detail loss when panning, now I'm noticing it everywhere even in Forza horizon 4, the detail loss when things get moving or turning is substantial.
The thing is the vast majority of games are targeting 60fps at 4k or dynamic 4k, from what I understand a single strobe monitor that works at 60fps is what I need to help with motion clarity at 60fps. But I'd also like to run VRR freesync simultaneously, is this possible? and will it cause more input lag.
Is there a list of monitors recommended for consoles with 60fps gaming in mind? Although the new consoles can do 120fps, the reality is most games won't be except for a select few eSport games maybe. I don't need 4k either, super sampled 1080p looks very crisp and clear.
Monitor for PS5/Series X, CRT like motion possible?

I'm also in the same boat

There are a couple upcoming monitors that will have single strobe at 60Hz. The ViewSonic XG2431 and an Eve Spectrum monitor (I don't remember the model number on that one).BYF wrote: ↑27 Jun 2021, 06:05Hi everyone,

60Hz single strobe is very important for console gaming. 60fps games of course look much better in motion (and games are nearly always in motion). Even 30fps games look much clearer with 60Hz strobing. It's true that you get the double image artifact, but clarity and detail in motion is still much better than the alternative. And the truth is, you still get a double image effect even on sample and hold displays. The only difference is you get smearing between the two positions.
This is unavoidable with 30fps games, because you can't refresh at 30Hz because it's just too stuttery and/or flickery. So every frame gets shown twice, and on a 60Hz display this will create a jittery, flashing kind of effect that can vary in intensity depending on the motion characteristics of the display.
It blows my mind that despite how massive the gaming industry is most display manufacturers continue to pump out sample and hold based displays, which are horrible for console gaming.
Re: Monitor for PS5/Series X, CRT like motion possible?
Thanks for the replies I will look out for this model from viewsonic you mention as 60fps/60hz gaming is the most used resolution I use when console gaming. Any idea on pricing in UK for this model?
I still have a 720p plasma which handles motion at 60hz/FPS much better than the LG monitor can at 60, but the resolution just isn't high enough these days. At 30fps though there is noticeable double imaging and phosphor trailing with judder.
