picked myself up a CRT for 20 bucks

Post by Cdim » 08 Jun 2014, 15:03

Craigslist owns.
Anyways, I grabbed a "Dell" sony Trinitron UltraScan P991 19"

Still waiting on the displayport-VGA converter to get it running, but does anyone know much about this display? I tried looking up information on it, but the discussion on it is slim to none.

here's a pic of it setup, It is in great shape btw, I think it was just sitting in this guys garage for years:

nice! That's a solid sony trinitron rebrand, and you'll be able to adjust it nicely with WinDAS if you ever choose to take that route.

First thing you should do is give it an hour or so to warm up and then do a color restore (should be in the on screen display menu somewhere). See how the image looks after doing this.

It's 4:3 and 19 inch, but will be great for gaming :)

I remember, I remember.

GLQuake on a 3Dfx Voodoo1 at 512x384 (for the leet 60fps framerates) on a very expensive 17" Samsung SyncMaster 17GLSi. I had bought that CRT monitor two years prior in 1995, for a whopping $1249 when everyone else was still using 13" or 14" CRTs. I got the 3Dfx Voodoo (Diamond Monster 3D) in February 1997.

yah theyre pretty awesome. they still have so many advantages over todays displays. its really too bad that theyve virtually died out. if only development had continued all these years...

i would still be using them if lightboost didnt exist. i had played around on a friends 120Hz lcd just a few years ago and still didnt feel it was worth it over my trusty CRT. however this XL2411Z is honestly close enough. i feel all the advantages of these newer lcds outweigh the relatively small decrease in motion fluidity.

I returned my $300 dollar vg248qe and got this lol. I do notice the difference @ around 100hz on my crt. It is just so fast. Plus, I am a graphic design student, so not only is gaming nicer, the color quality is way closer to print. The blacks and color range/depth is soooooo much better. Very satisfied with this CRT, I thought it was just hype. Downsides are obvious with screen being smaller (not a big deal to me personally), and it not being portable though.

keep your eye out for any of the 21 inch trinitrons, and if you can find one, an FW900 :)
