MouseTester 1.5.3 alternatives (not trustworthy)?

Post by Weissrolf » 23 Jul 2023, 05:14

Ahoi!

Is there a software more trustworthy than MouseTester 1.5.3 when it comes to measuring mouse-polling rates? The old MouseRate application seems to work quite well, but is rather limited in features and usable screen space for measurements.

"Log"'s first run is always broken. Consecutive "Log" runs usually work, but regularly report higher poll rates and can become as broken as the first run. "Collect" runs are always broken and once used also break "Log" runs. Overall I don't trust this software, especially not to base discussions on other than maybe trends and estimates.

Measurements done with deliberately fast mouse movement, *all* CPU C/P states disabled (including C1 non E) via Windows power profile and Windows timer manually set to 0.5 ms.

Manually set the affinity to one of the least used cores in the system. 0 and 1 generates spikes, especially with the newest version of windows.

CPPC already prioritizes my boosting cores 2+3 and then 5+6 and almost all (hardly existing) background processes/services are pushed to E cores via Sets. So if this isn't enough for MouseTester to come to proper results then it still doesn't seem like a trustworthy application for the rather simple job it is meant to do.

What I have understood regarding the mouse tester is that the results differ according to the version of windows you have. For example, in version 1709, if we compare the results of the mouse tester with the results of version 22H2 of Windows 10, we are talking about completely different graphs (I should point out that in this comparison we assume that the state of windows is the same in both versions). graphics that we see in older versions of Windows are not going to be seen in the latest versions of Windows 10 and in any case in Windows 11. Basically I don't consider the mouse tester to be reliable in the latest versions of windows 10 or windows 11.

99% of PC users never use / heard either of them

And still perfoms "well"

If it measures polling in the tens and hundreds of thousands then our definition of "well" is quite loose.
