DP Cables

Post by Kanipshun » 07 Sep 2022, 08:16

I've been having the same issues everyone talks about here for around 4 years or so. This past week I honestly told myself that it was time to give up after I tried a Furman power conditioner and a new windows install. The problem was still there. No big deal, Ill send the Furman back. New windows install didnt seem to make much difference either.
I decided one last attempt, I would buy like the only DP cable that I hadn't actually purchased before because it was always recommended on reddit. The cable arrived on Sunday. I plugged it in assuming it was a waste of time like everything else I tried, turned the pc on and the sluggish mouse was gone. I keep assuming it will come back because it always does but the mouse has been smooth for several days now and it doesn't seem to be changing.
I have honestly tried about 7 or 8 different cables at this point because that was always one of my biggest suspicions. I did always notice that some cables seemed better than others but this one is different.
I downloaded GPU-Z because I am running on a fresh windows install and hadn't downloaded it yet. I decided to open GPU-Z to see if I could notice anything different and that was when I noticed something very strange. In the advanced tab under the monitor link rate current and link rate max- in the past has always read Link Rate Current 5.4 gbps and Link Rate Max 8.1 gbps. This was always true no matter what cable I used. If I changed to 10 bit color depth in Nvidia CP, the current rate would jump up to match the max at 8.1 gbps but it never changed the feeling of the mouse.
On the new DP cable, under Link Rate Current it reads 8.1 gbps. I'm not using 10 bit color either. I want to go back and check all the other cables again BUT I honestly do not feel like messing anything up right now because my mouse has never been this consistent all day long.
I know it's too early to say it's completely fixed bc I know how it always manages to come creeping back but I will keep this thread updated towards the end of this week. I'm not sure if it is ok to mention the cable that seems to have fixed the issue.

EDIT- IMPORTANT NOTE- New monitor is 180 hz and I have only had it for a month and a half. I never tested on GPU Z in that time. The old monitor is 165 hz which apparently will use DP 1.2 speeds. I always thought this was wrong.

I do still stand by the fact that this particular cable has made a very noticeable difference in mouse lag.

Why the hell do you not list which DP cable you bought?

I wanted to wait a few days to make sure nothing changes and try to prove that the other cables were inferior. I guess it wont hurt to say the cable was KabelDirekt DP 1.4 3 ft.

So, now I've been testing my other cables and they are all running at 8.1 gbps. I don't understand why 2 monitors, 8 different cables and it always ran at 5.4 gbps link speed before but after I plug the KabelDirekt DP cable in they all run at 8.1 now. Yes, they were all DP 1.4 cables, yes-my monitor and gpu have always supported 1.4. I have always tried downloading monitor drivers and not having them. I've done countless window fresh installs and countless ddu clean and reinstall Nvidia drivers.

Don't know if it matters, but did you maybe put it in another GPU port than before?

Nope, it was the same one which is technically the first port. I have tried every port before though.

I have an LG 27GP850 and 3080ti. I honestly don't think it is a monitor issue or a driver issue. I have a crazy notion to believe its a windows issue but I have no clue. I can tell you that I have had this problem for a long time.
