G-Sync not working properly?

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

G-Sync not working properly?

Post by kellyprocter » 27 Sep 2024, 05:07

Hello,
I've been playing Horizon Zero Dawn on my new laptop but which has G-Sync and I've enabled it on the control panel as well. I've getting upwards of 120fps but it doesn't feel smooth at all. not like sometimes it hitches, it just consistently feel very umm not-smooth? but if I cap the frame rate to let's say 100, it feels buttery smooth. So I'm guessing the issue is with frace pacing, but having G-Sync on should help if that's the case afaik, so why doesn't it work?

G-sync can not fix bad frame pacing. It only fixes FPS/Hz mismatch judder. An FPS limiter is what usually fixed frame pacing in most games.

With that being said, make sure you run your display at its highest possible refresh rate when using g-sync, and also make sure FPS does not exceed that refresh rate. On a 120Hz display, g-sync won't work if FPS goes near 120FPS. It needs to be capped below that for g-sync to work correctly. If you set "low latency mode" to "ultra" in the nvidia panel, or if the game has Nvidia Reflex support and you enable that, then the driver will automatically cap the frame rate to get the best result with g-sync as long as you also enable vsync in the nvidia panel.
