How to test if DSC is enabled.

Post by LoveTilapia » 17 Dec 2024, 00:24

Hello friends.

I bought a cable and I want to test its quality. I have an AMD 7900xt.

Is there a way to tell if DSC is enabled on the PC end for AMD users, I know Nvidia has that DSR not working trick when DSC is enabled. I know my TV can support 48gbit without DSC, but there are no DSC indicators.

I have asked the question to ToastyX maker of CRU, he also doesn't know of anything to indicate DSC on AMD gpus.

I need to research this some more.

We've had problems determining whether DSC is enabled, because of lack of utilities informing me whether DSC is enabled or not.

There is a need.

Expensive third party equipment (e.g. AstroDesign) will do it, but end users are sometimes left adrift.

Salutes Chief,

Thanks for the chime in.

According to ToastyX Nvidia defaults to Ignore DSC setting in EDID. Do you think this is because they were getting too many complaints/ black screens from people with bad cables, so they may have decided, well shucks, let's turn on DSC whenever possible, to that chagrin of all enthusiasts.

I wonder what AMD does. Is there perhaps a visual test pattern we can create where the DSC will produce obvious compression blur.

So I've been looking into this, and apparently you can tell using GPU-Z. Under the "advanced" tab, there's a section for "Link Rate" under each monitor. I run a 5080 with a FO32U2P 32 inch 4k 240hz monitor with a VESA certified 6 foot DP 2.1 cable. Link rate shows "20.0 Gbps" for me. Someone on reddit says this means I'm running full DP 2.1 bandwidth with no DSC. Can you confirm this?
