DPL Projector vs OLED Response times?

Post by Bobolinkage » 24 Nov 2025, 16:45

I have heard that a really good DPL projector (such as the BenQ X3100i) is faster than an OLED screen at the same hz. Is that true or is there more to it than that? Does it compare to the classic CRT tube TVs? Would gamers want to invest in DPL projectors, but most haven't realized the benefits yet? Interested to hear what your thoughts are on this subject.

Rabbit Hole Alert

There's more to it.

1. Response time doesn't fix motion blur fully. See read GtG versus MPRT. You can have 0ms GtG and still have lots of motion blur. Motion blur is throttled by frametime & refreshtime on a sample and hold display, as seen at www.testufo.com/eyetracking

2. DLP uses binary temporal dithering, flashing pixels on and off, to generate colors. Their response time is absurdly fast, but "noisy" when viewed at close distances. 480Hz OLEDs currently provide much better motion clarity than DLPs.

But yes, gaming DLPs are nice. Latency is the biggest problem with DLP, but Optoma now has a 240Hz gaming DLP for under $1000. So a gaming DLP already exists on the market!

Thanks for that. I also noticed I mispelled it as DPL when it is DLP lol. I'm interested in getting a huge screen, and the largest OLED I could find was an 83-inch 165Hz that costs 5k, but the projectors can get much larger and have 240Hz, though only at 1080p (but much cheaper like the projector you mentioned). So would a 150-inch 1080 240hz projected image look like dog water or be good enough while being competitively responsive at an unparalleled size?

It's much clearer motion than any 60Hz display, but you will definitely notice some color depth loss during fast imagery. And the rainbow effect (color wheel) if you're sensitive to that.

I can't tell you if you will love or hate the display. Displays are polarizing but a big screen is quite fun. It can be definitely worth buying a projector as part of your entertainment, and making sure it has some bonus features too (240Hz) to also include PC gaming in addition to your Netflix and other stuff.
