BenQXL2411Z brightness

Post by Fasyx » 14 Jan 2015, 08:39

Hey,

I´m fine with my settings I set for my BenQXL2411Z. However, when i turn on "Blur Reduction" via monitor options, brightness significantly goes down. I have brightness set to 100 in the monitor settings, as well as on DisplayPilot(BenQ Software). Can I get more brigtness out of the monitor(I would like having my brigtness when Blur Reduction ist set off, combined with Blur Reduction actually set on - you get it? ).

Lg

By the way I have set "brighter screen" on the BB Utility Tool to 3.5ms, and afaik a higher rate is bad for playing games like cs.go.

It's not possible. Well it's possible but not too easy to implement.

Blur reduction uses the same technology as analog televisions and CRT's--a strobing backlight which helps 'black' the screen at very quick intervals to show smooth motion to the eye (instead of one pixel being lit at 2-3 different locations at one time when moving fast across the screen=motion blur). Just CRT's and LCD's did this differently--a CRT was designed ground up for strobing. LCD's are still designed to be used as traditional fixed pixel displays and storbing is more of a 'hack job' at the moment. The Oculus is being designed with strobing in mind, though.

Currently you can gain a "little" more brightness at the same persistence by using a vertical total tweak, compared to 60 hz refresh rate with the same persistence. e.g. at 60hz refresh rate, strobe duty 006= 1 millisecond of persistence by backlight pulsing on/off (I wrote another post earlier writing how many times the backlight pulses a second, too tired to remember the math now), and 100 and 120hz with a Vertical Total 1350 or 1500 tweak, strobe duty 006= 1 ms persistence (strobe duty and phase can be set directly through the service menu or through windows with the utility). But 60hz with strobe duty 006 (1ms) will be slightly darker than 100 hz with strobe duty 006, although not by much (mainly due to # of strobes per refresh).

Without a vertical total tweak, strobe duty 010 @ 100 hz = 1 ms persistence (006=1 ms with a VT tweak), but since the refresh rate is the same here, the brightness is very close at the same persistence.

Anyway, did you ever use lightboost? Was lightboost 10% too dark for you?
Because benq blur reduction at 100 and 120hz, with a VT 1500 tweak, should be VERY close to the same brightness as lightboost 10%, at 1.0ms persistence, while having MORE motion blur reduction than lightboost 10% (smoother image, noticeable to the naked eye).

The brightest you can make the monitor, without sacrificing image quality or contrast clipping white points, is standard mode, RGB channels 100, 100, 100, Gamma 3 or 4, Brightness 100 and Contrast 50. Vertical Total 1500 tweak used at 100 hz (timings for 100 hz: 1920x1080, front porch 88/4, sync width 44/5, Horizontal total 2200, vertical total 1500, does NOT require the toastyX pixel clock patcher if pixel clock is 330.00 MHz or lower), and for 120 hz : 1920x1080@120, front porch 48/3, sync width 32/5, HT: 2080, VT 1500, pixel clock 374.40 MHz, REQUIRES toastyX pixel clock patcher).

These are the limits.

Strobe persistence between 0.5ms (best motion quality, dark screen, strobe duty 003), to persistence 1.5ms (Strobe duty 009=lightboost 10%, so-so motion quality, comfortably bright screen, strobe crosstalk at the top will be moved downwards a bit downwards from the top, increasing strobe duty lowers the top border crosstalk from the top of the screen, might hurt image quality in FPS games where the top is very important).

If you require a high strobe duty for a brighter screen and you find too much blurry strobe crosstalk at the top of the screen, you could try 'inverting' the crosstalk and moving it to the bottom, but the backlight will SHUT OFF if you go past 059 strobe phase at 100 hz or 050 strobe phase at 120 hz.

Assuming Vertical total 1500 and 100hz, you can try these values (going too high on strobe phase lowers strobe duty, strobe duty dropping to 0 shuts the backlight off).:
(strobe phase= PERSISTENCE IN STROBE DUTY (note: actual strobe duty value doesn't change, but the persistence of what strobe duty WOULD be if strobe phase were set to 000, is the equivalent I am giving!):

you can see the persistence is a multiple of 0.167.
100hz VT 1500 tables given (credit goes to masterotaku).
Phase 060=0 persistence=blacklight turns off.
Phase 059= strobe duty 001 (0.167ms--all higher values of persistence are IGNORED)
Phase 058=strobe duty 002 (0.333 ms (only .167 and .333 can be set, all higher values IGNORED))
Phase 057=strobe duty 003 (0.500 ms) (only .167, .333, and .500 can be set)
Phase 056=Strobe duty 004 (0.667ms) (only .167, .333, .500 and .667 can be set)
Phase 055=strobe duty 005 (0.835 ms)
Phase 054=strobe duty 006 (1.0 ms).
Raising phase from 059 upwards INCREASES The maximum strobe duty that can be set.
As you can see, at strobe phase of 030 or lower, all strobe duty values (001-030 (5 ms) can be set and used, but crosstalk will be smack in the middle of the screen at strobe phase 030 so you'll need a phase of 000 (top edge crosstalk, totally gone at strobe duty 001-003) or a high phase if you want the crosstalk at the bottom.
Strobe crosstalk will be at the bottom, rising upwards. Top of the screen will be crosstalk free. Adjust for desired brightness and enough clarity for counter-strike.

And so on.

As far as I know I can´t use lightboost on my monitor(Z-series), or am I wrong?

I tryed the custom resolution thing, followed this guide and used CRU: http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Threa ... tility-CRU However the custom resolution never appeared on windows or catalyst control center, so I couldn´t use it :(

If they didn't appear on CCC, it means you didn't use the pixel clock patcher.
Please download the AMD or Nvidia pixel clock patcher from the same page as CRU.
Then run it, after you patch it, run the driver restarter (on the CRU forum page). you can also re-run the patcher to verify if the values are patched.

Thanks. Done. However, when using the driver reset I can hear three sounds: USB out, USB in, USB out(probably the monitor). I restarted my pc and I get an "out of range" message from the monitor. I found this video about this problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5lmoWaB4i8

Any advices?

And by the way: What are the pros from a custom resolution?

If you are getting "out of range" it means your timings are wrong.
Can you post the EXACT TIMINGS you are using for your vertical tweaks?

In custom resolution utility
For 100hz
post horizontal and vertical active pixels and lines
front porch pixels and lines
Sync width
horizontal and vertical total
pixel clock total and refresh rate shown.

Do the same for 120hz.

if there are any other resolutions listed under "detailed resolutions" list those timings also. (the only thing that should be there is 60 hz (148.50 MHz) and your 100 and 120hz customs.

You can always run reset-all.exe, restart the driver and then start again.
It's impossible to get an out of range screen if your timings are correct.

You can't use NORMAL timings at 144 hz.
144 hz is not a standard refresh rate. I explained this in an above post.
144 hz can only use LCD REDUCED (reduced/CVT) Timings.
You also can NOT use VT tweaks at 144 hz. There isn't enough bandwidth for it.
Look at that pixel clock o.o

The highest pixel clock you can do reliably is 120hz with a VT 1500 tweak with those timings I listed: and this STILL requires the ToastyX AMD pixel clock patcher (>330.00 MHz requires patcher).

1920x1080@120 hz
front porch 48/3
sync 32/5
HT: 2080. VT 1500.

This is the maximum you can do reliably.
You may be able to create a 127-131hz refresh rate with these timings and VT 1500 and not go out of range, IF you are lucky.
