CPU Issues Brand New Machine

Post by Cryogenetic » 04 Mar 2022, 20:05

Was having issues with my old PC and it was time for an upgrade so I got a new one, but there has been some strangeness.

The CPU is an intel i7 11700F and the day I got it I was testing Apex Legends at 237fps for Gsync and the temps were around 70 average spiking to 80 but rarely. It's been 3-4 days now and I capped it to 144fps (since some users have reported the game performing strange above 144) without G-Sync but was testing temps again and it was showing 80C average with spikes into 94C which is way too high. Idle temps are 32-35C so I don't think it's a bad heat sink.

This is a brand new $2400 machine with 6 fans and the GPU is only hitting 60-70C. The CPU should be capable of hitting 4.9ghz but is only reaching highs of 4.5ghz (averaging between 4.2 and 4.39) according to Core Temp and Task Manager even with the High Performance power plan enabled.

Also I'm not sure if this is normal or not but windows defender is taking up 10-15% of my CPU while gaming, I've tried to disable real time protection but it was no luck. Is this something fairly normal or is this indicative of something strange going on?

I don't know where this temperature spike came from, even reverting my FPS limiter to let it go to 237 again is only making it worse. Do I just need to get a better cooler?

Oh also I forgot to mention, Core 2 and Core 3 are consistently taking the majority of the load while gaming (70-80% while the others are 20). I know games generally only utilize 2 cores, but I thought the load was supposed to shift around to the other cores? This machine seems to just have those cores doing all of the work all the time. I checked the affinity and it's using all cores.

Cant really say if those temps are normal or not. Make sure u have the latest bios flashed then only load the xmp profile. install windows 11. do windows Upgrade. Also they Fixed Apex. u Dont have to play on 190 fps anymore. U can cap it 237 fps if u have a 240hz screen or 298 if u have 360+ monitor.

Oh interesting, is it possible that this CPU is ok to run that hot and is normal? I did my windows updates but I think I'm going to stick to windows 10 unless there is significant improvements for the time being. Thank you for letting me know about Apex that's awesome.

Also is the behaviour of defender also normal? I've never really noticed before, I was trying to get a baseline of this machine so I was being very picky about details. I'm also confused why core 2 and 3 of 8 seem to be doing all the work all the time rather than it shifting, or even changing cores from time to time but no matter how many times I launch games it's cores 2 and 3..

Your GPU is probably bound to Core 2 and 3.
Until a year ago some hardcore gamers ( some still do) made use of of program called Processor Affinity Policy to bind the GPU to a other core or cores if they have multithreading enabled.
Youtuber Fr33thy found out it does not really make a difference so he does not use it anymore in his setup videos.
If u want the smoothest Windows 10 possible follow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCc0xPC ... el=FR33THY or his latest video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UGYzai ... el=FR33THY with his latest video u have to use his custom ISO if I am not mistaken. That could be a little risky if u don't 100% trust him. ( I do)

The average range for CPU temperature while gaming is between 75°C (167°F) and 80°C (176°F). So yeah your temps sound normal. ( I just Googled: normal cpu temp while gaming)

Don't forget to upgrade your BIOS to the latest version and at least enable the XMP profile.

Are you using the stock cooler?, if yes, upgrade the stock cooler for one with more cooling performance, probably your CPU is throttling now at high temps/loads.
