My only concern with my Asus Pulsar monitor is how hot it gets. I know people don't like active cooling in monitors but I think this might have benefited from it. The main rear part of the monitor is fine, it's the edges that seem to be the warmest (noticeable when I use the menu nub).
Understand the concern, especially with some users seemingly receiving the emergency shutdown warning, but I think they were an unlucky few with a product defect.
The other way around is that active cooling other than noise would also result in more internal dust build up and if the fan starts rattling or dying you'd face the issue where passive functionality is probably not going to work as it is designed with dependency of the active cooling, unlike here.
I guess we will see how it will go in the long term of things, a friend for example is still rocking the Dell U3011 since ~2011 (which has had a ton of burning hours at this point) and that thing is literally a microwave when sitting in front of it. The monitor can draw up to 200-250W of power which is basically the power draw of older generation x80/x80Ti class GPUs actually heating up the room.
Comparing that to the Pulsar, which specs show to be roughly 70kWh per 1000 hours in HDR mode, that would be roughly 70 watts, maybe a little less without HDR and medium to high brightness levels, the PG279Q would likely be around 40-50W with medium-high brightness are in a total different league compared to the U3011 which didn't even need active cooling, the heat that is output from the top is quite hot and levels above of what these monitors seem dissipate.
So if it is done right I think it can be done without issue and hopefully people won't be too worried about the overheating. I think the thin bezels make it seem worse than it actually is for the internals.
